Crupi had no trouble closing in the Suburban, nailing a confidently ridden Bendoog late. Good effort by a horse who has been knocking at the door for a while now.

Yea, I was wondering how closers were going to fair today but Crupi just answered that question which means Sierra Leone should have no problem later today.

It's kind of a funny balance--Saratoga does tend to favor speed horses, and you usually want some forward placement at 10f, but once everyone starts to think that speed is advantageous they might overcorrect and accidentally eliminate the bias themselves. It's also possible that the wind is changing the track over time.

We'll see how the rest of the dirt races play out, but I'm not about to change my Belmont wagers quite yet.

Seen this Smarty feature a couple of times and I love it. My second time ever at a racetrack, and still by far one of the most memorable.

Close finish in the Ogden Phipps, as Randomized got the lead and Idiomatic ALMOST ran her down on the wire. Good race.

Huge effort by both horses, but I think the ride made the difference there. Awesome race!

Was there a timer malfunction? Never saw splits or a final time.

I’ve read several tweets about the track bias - they think it’s still strongly favoring speed, that the result of the Suburban was due to a bad ride on the runner up

Dave Grening posted the fractions: Phipps fractions: 24.34, 48.99, 1:12.59, 1:36,86 and 1:49.58. Not sure why they didn't show on the broadcast.

None of the forward horses stuck around in the Suburban except for the big favorite, who was several lengths off. I think the track is kind to speed but far from a conveyor belt, which is pretty much par for the course for Saratoga. But I also don't really listen to anyone on handicapping twitter unless they are named Craig Milkowski, David Aragona (what an amazing ML he came up with for the Phipps!), or Andy Serling.

Tough race--I feel like Book 'em Danno is being overbet based on his race against a B-effort Forever Young, but he also can't be ignored. Most of this field could win, but I kind of like Be You on the cutback, and Reasoned Analysis at 30-1 is kind of irresistible.

Well that was a weird race. The track isn't THAT speed-favoring, guys! Huge effort by Book'em Danno, especially coming back from that tough race abroad.

Nash had no chance after that start, think the jockey lost his stirrups? Can't believe Nutella Fella got up for third. Sounded like the announcer got Imagination and Prince of Monaco mixed up in the stretch.

Yea I was confused by the call  He said imagination (which is why I typed that) but then I looked at the numbers and was like 'wait that isn't Imagination'

i think he mixed up Imagination and Nutella Fella. he was mentioning Prince of Monaco and then said Imagination was closing in but it was Nutella Fella. where did Imagination actually finish?

Somewhere back in the scrum, I know Reasoned Analysis was fourth. Was super confusing for me, because I was looking at those horses like... uhh where is the big blaze? Had no idea who was in third until they mentioned it on the broadcast.

Competitive race coming up next!
