I need help with something. I got "flutterbyes" in my heart for Sweet Azteca when she won the GI Beholder Mile back on 3/9 in her 4th career start with a 108 BSF. She's a homebred for Pamela Ziebarth trained by Michael McCarthy. By Sharp Azteca out of How Sweetitis, by Grand Slam.

She didn't breeze after her GI win until 3/28, almost 3 weeks after the race, and then turned in 2 more workouts pretty normally spaced, the last one on 4/12. Now, she turns up with a modest 4f work on Preakness Day, 5/18, at Santa Anita. That was 4 days ago, but about 5 weeks after her last work. I'm just wanting to find out what's going on with this obviously talented filly!

I don't do the whole "social media" thing (I lurk, but I don't know how to really use it). I don't know how to contact Michael McCarthy to ask him what his plans, short term or long, are for this filly......not that he'd ever answer me. I just know that I've fallen in love with her and I want to know that she's OK and where she's headed.

Anybody have any helpful insights?

Next time she runs, if it’s at Santa Anita, McCarthy may very well get interviewed in the paddock. I don’t know the Santa Anita Stakes schedule anymore, even in the abstract. Have they run the Santa Margarita or the Milady………do they still run the Santa Margarita or the Milady? I know Del Mar has that G1 for mares on dirt named after a famous CA horseman, i.e. Charlie Howard, Lou Rowan, Clement Hirsch or knowing Del Mar maybe it’s now the Del Margarita Myracehorse Stakes. At any rate, a race at Santa Anita to prep for that is possible. I’m just spitballing though. One would think with the Breeder’s Cup at Bing’s Place this year, a G1 tour of the oval would be a good idea.

Santa Margarita is on Sunday(I originally typed Monday). Milady was renamed to the Adoration and hasn't been ran since 2018. I sent Missbeholder a pm to how she can contact McCarthy, I don't know if his stable will respond but I've had pretty good luck the times I've contacted trainers. I've keep it polite and simple.

IDK why I didn't think to look earlier. She injured herself. https://www.drf.com/news/glatt-not-worr ... d-gold-cup
"Sweet Azteca, winner of the Grade 1 Beholder Mile on March 9 at Santa Anita, returns to training this week after an untimely setback derailed plans for the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff on the Kentucky Derby undercard.

“She cut her knee and literally filleted it wide open” trainer Michael McCarthy said. “Horrible timing. She’s just back, she’ll start galloping here this week.”"

I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

She's been posting steady workouts. And while the entries haven't been announced yet, she is supposed to be in the Santa Margarita on Sunday, I thought it was Monday.

Thanks very much, Flanders, for the response plus the added info from the DRF article. I'm certainly sorry she got hurt, but It's quite encouraging to know that it isn't anything more serious. And thanks as well for the pm. I'll reach out to MM in the next couple of days and see what happens.☺️

I’m glad the Santa Margarita exists still. It’s a rather historic race. You used to be able to find footage of the 1968 running, a throw down between stablemates Gamely and Princessnesian. The race from 1972-‘75 attracted an incredible wealth of talent. It would go on to do similar over the years as well, but that 4 year period was special, at least to me.

Neon Icon a gray 3 yo filly by Arrogate won an allowance at CD yesterday by open lengths with a strong gallop out. One to follow moving forward. https://x.com/fanduel_racing/status/179 ... 94281?s=46

OOoooooh.......she worked at Santa Anita yesterday (5/25), 5 furlongs in 58.80 for a ranking on the day of 2/51! And that was recorded only 7 days after her come-back work off an injury!

I did send a message to Michael McCarthy.....haven't heard back yet and maybe I won't. But this is very encouraging to me!🤩

Adare Manor won the Santa Margarita, and my theory "the bigger the ears, the better the horse" still stands. ;)

I noted that Justique was in this race. She hasn't won in two years: I kinda have a soft spot for her but they keep putting her in races with top notch horses and she barely lifted her hoof in this one- in fact that has been the case in most of her races. I wonder why they don't drop her down in competition or perhaps she needs a new trainer. What do you think?

I agree, she had so much potential with her big closing kick when she first debuted and now it just seems she lost the heart to run. Though she did run 2nd in a G3 last out so, I guess she still has the talent... she just needs to get the right spot to find a win.

here we go again!!
I swear its all for social media attention. I'm sure if there isn't already a tweet saying, "What do you guys think about my plan?" there will be shortly. He appears to thrive on attention.
Well, he’s given himself another out by saying his budget is $6m. I think she will go for more than that, so hopefully she can stay retired. She’s done plenty.
Well, he didn’t buy her. He didn’t even bid. She sold to Yulong for $6.6mil AUD. They also bought G1 winner Chain of Lightning for $2.5mil.

The other big spender at the sale was Coolmore. They bought Madame Pommery for $2.7mil and Platinum Jubilee for $3.5mil.

Idiomatic unlikely to face the males in her 5 y/o campaign, aiming for the Ogden Phipps. Also mentioned that they're trying to close out her racing career with a repeat win in the BC distaff.
Now 5, Idiomatic figures to become another member of Juddmonte's regal broodmare at the end of the year.

"I never say never but it makes sense," O'Rourke said about the possibility of 2024 being her final year of racing. "We could have made that decision last year. More likely than not it will be her final year, but that decision will be made by the family (of the late Prince Khalid Abdullah) and not me."
