Sorry, unpopular opinion, but for everybody going on about how great Lukas is - his other horse gets injured in the race. Typical.
How many trainers out there would run a horse who’s raced 5 times in a year, not won any of those races, finishes near last in the Derby - then enters the horse again 2 weeks back?
He acts like they are made of steel. Can’t stand him.

Why is it his fault the horse got injured? Unless you’re going to blame other trainers for injuries their horses suffer..

Many liked JS as a viable long shot going into the Derby. I don’t know if he had a bad trip, but if not - the race could be looked at as a toss. Everyone complains when horses don’t run back in 2 weeks, now you’re complaining that he did because of a bad race? When he’d been performing well?

Can you please point to a trainer who runs horses that haven’t even won a race in the same year in back-to-back TC races? We usually joke those people don’t know what they are doing, and are mismanaging their horses.
Time and again, he has raced the SNOT out of his horses, regardless of their form, just enters them race after race. Sometimes they win. Often they don’t. He grinds them down, all you have to do is word search him in this forum. He has mismanaged a lot of horses in his day. Yes, he’s raced some great horses - imo, a testimony to their mental strength, soundness and grit.

Also, a condylar fracture by definition is a repetitive concussive injury that results in a fracture. It means the body has done something one too many times, too much stress on the bones.

Preakness winner Seize the Grey likely for Belmont Stakes though he’s going back to Louisville. Just Steel did come out of race with condylar fracture right front. Will go to Dr Barmlage for likely surgery.

Yeah, when I say "race your horses," I mean it with the implicit addition of "if they are healthy and in spots they are competitive." Lukas's program is certainly not the one I would have people emulate, and I think there would have been a lot less celebration yesterday if Charismatic had happened 20 years later. As most racing jurisdictions are starting to realize and acknowledge, musculoskeletal injuries do not happen in a vacuum.

I wasn't opposed to Just Steel running yesterday, but it's not a shock that he was injured, and I hope he recovers well.

Thank you for posting this. Lukas has always chewed up and spit out his horses. At least Just Steel is still alive. Union City died in his Preakness after finishing 15th in the Derby. It was his seventh start of the year.

But we’ve also seen horses with light racing schedules break down fatally too. The Preakness was Barbaro’s 7th lifetime start. Pine Island was making her 7th lifetime start in the 2006 BC Distaff. The pair of three year olds who died horribly on TV at Saratoga last summer were both making lifetime start #6.

Does anyone think Tuscan Gold is better off because this year’s Preakness was his 4th career race?

Lightly raced horses may be lightly raced because they have soundness problems, and indeed there were rumors that Barbaro was not particularly sound before his Preakness. All else being equal, there's nothing wrong with actually racing racehorses. Work is good for bone, and keeping horses in the barn, especially at 2, can lead to negative long-term effects.

But there are limits, and it's pretty much undeniable that Lukas has left a long trail of sore and sour horses in his wake. Winning a Classic with a longshot on the front end while a second horse emerges injured from that same race is pretty much the perfect microcosm of his career.

That sounds like real Troll behavior. A troll who just wants to create chaos and upset complete strangers will post crap that may have nothing to do with his/her actual thinking, but which the troll knows will get the MOST reactions from readers.
The only tactic I've found that works (at least for me) is to ignore them. A wise poster on another site once told me: "Don't feed the trolls, dear. That only encourages them."

I believe there’s still one left Maritime Traveler, a stallion in Florida. He’d be 34. Border died on December 20, 2022. Officially he would have turned 35 twelve days later, however his foaling date was March 23. At any rate, what set me straight in terms of keeping things in perspective was Spectacular Bid. Being we were both CA Breds, I loved Flying Paster and not only could he just not beat Bid but Bud Delp was not real likable. A few years later though, I realized just how lucky I was to have watched him run in person. I met both Secretariat and a, by then, cream colored Spectacular Bid at Claiborne, Derby Week 1987. Both were true gentlemen. I told the groom that being a Californian I rooted for Sham and Flying Paster and he winked and said a peppermint or two would make them forgive. The power of the crinkling of cellophane. No hard feelings from man nor beast.
