Saw some interesting tweets from Kate Hunter after someone was bemoaning the fact that the Japanese horses shipped home after the Derby.

I paraphrased a bit but have included the 3 posts I think were the most relevant:

Japanese horses have a minimum 5 day export/import quarantine period. If being imported(returned) to Japan, they have another 3 weeks before they are allowed to return to a training center. The export to race is only for 90 days. If they go over the 90 days, it triggers a penalty quarantine on return to Japan that is anywhere from 90 to 120 days. Because Forever Young shipped to Saudi Arabia, Dubai, then the US, he had to return to Japan because he was very near the 90 day limit.

So does this mean that, if Forever Young had won the Derby (which he came within two noses away from doing), he wouldn't have been able to run in the Preakness, much less the Belmont? At least without jeopardizing his ability to run a viable Fall campaign? Just because of quarantine rules that are draconian by normal international practices?

It's a moot point now because of those two noses, but wouldn't the JRA feel pretty badly to miss out on an opportunity to win the American Triple Crown? Chances are looking pretty good that a Japanese horse will win the Derby in the next few years. Looks like they may have to plan to do it with a horse that doesn't go to Saudi Arabia and then Dubai first! Or make some adjustments to their quarantine protocols!

I think he would have been allowed to run in the Preakness before the 90 days, but not the Belmont. I would assume they would have just trained/raced him in the US and taken the extended quarantine later.

Yes!!!
That's a fabulous photo of Ten Happy Rose and her connections.
And we were especially happy for her jockey Akihide Tsumura.
He had been very-well known by the racegoers and his colleagues in Japan as an excellent rider.
But he had just been unlucky.
His speech in the post-race interview after winning his first G1 title in the Victoria Mile was so moving that reduced me to tears, too.

2nd favorite Cervinia(JPN), 2021F. Harbinger(GB) x Cecchino(JPN) by King Kamehameha(JPN), got up late under Christophe Lemaire to deny Stellenbosch(JPN) and win the G1 Yushun Himba 2400m turf at Tokyo on May 19th 2024.
Harbinger has now sired seven individual G1 winners, three of whom are o/o King Kamehameha mares.
Cecchino was the runner-up in the 2016 Yushun Himba.

When saddle horse shopping for my niece years ago, we had to pass on a handsome buckskin due to ringbone. IIRC, that is a chronic condition. Does this mean that Amante Blanco will have to be retired? Or is there treatment now for ringbone?
