I don't care if it's your damn twin brother. Get a contract in writing, charge some money. And check on the horse from time to time.

And even then you can be too late to save the horse. But at least with a signed contract you do have the last-ditch option of suing the bastard, and hoping for lots of news coverage.second_glance wrote:I don't care if it's your damn twin brother. Sure. But a contract makes it more formal & gives the transaction more weight, putting up some money may mean the buyer won't be so quick to dump it -- and, of course, checking up on the horse regularly is the best preventative of all!Catalina wrote:And even then you can be too late to save the horse. What happened to the second person that caused him to send the horse "direct to slaughter"? It sounds like the horse did something. Why didn't he call the original owner and tell him to come get his horse? Or did he and no one came? There is a name on those registration papers and if it didn't match the name of the person who sent the horse to auction, wouldn't that raise flags about stolen animals?
Could that be the criminal complaint? Stolen horse? It didn't belong to the person who sold it for slaughter and so collected money for it? A fancy show horse in good condition should be worth more than slaughter price...why didn't he sell the horse outright? It sounds more like they wanted to dump the horse quickly and hide the sale.
With text messages, phones, Skype and email--for goodness sake, Facebook, lack of communication is no excuse. Even the day of the sale, the registration papers had the owners name on them.
How does a direct to slaughter tag come to be?

What causes a "direct to slaughter tag"? Any of a number of things. The horse annoyed the owner (maybe truly so, and maybe because the owner is stupid), the horse really is dangerous (all of a sudden, when he has a successful show career in his past?), the previous owner annoyed the current owner who now wants to get back at the original owner for that, or the current owner simply told a story and wanted to convert the horse for quick cash and wants the horse out of circulation before he maybe gets spotted at a feedlot and the game is up.BornToWin wrote:What happened to the second person that caused him to send the horse "direct to slaughter"? Maybe so, but prove it was stolen. Without any signed paperwork it's one person's word against another's.BornToWin wrote: Could that be the criminal complaint? Stolen horse? It didn't belong to the person who sold it for slaughter and so collected money for it?

Thanks, Ziggypop. More on this story from the EquineRescueNetwork FB page.
Missing Horse - ran through the New Holland auction on September 16th. Possible hip number of 126. Contact (216) 870-6966 with any information. Another 'breach of contract' story - this is why we need to scan for microchips at all auctions (which ERN hopes to implement soon depending on what happens with the legislation on Oct. 22)....
This message was sent to us, please keep a look out!
Looking for a horse that went through the New Holland auction on September 16th. Possible hip number of 126. We are looking for a AQHA gelding that was sold....most likely outside. Gelding was AQHA named Centerfold Kid and was a halter champion. Original owner was to have horse returned and other party disregarded the agreement. If any information is known contact we so I can forward information to or contact Pat O'Brien directly. He is an Admin. Pat's contact number is (216) 870-6966. Please keep an eye out for him and ask others to do the same!
Not sure what "He is an Admin" means though. Of what.

Update on Centerfold Kid, according to a post on Lucky Starz FB page, someone talked to the owner yesterday and the horse had HYPP. http://www.aqha.com/About/Content-Pages ... 063E4&_z=z
Also, there is new information on the horse, but nothing more said. https://www.facebook.com/luckystarhorses

For some time now, you have probably heard, or had first-hand knowledge, of the condition known as hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP). This condition is characterized by intermittent episodes of muscle tremors (shaking or trembling, weaknesses and/or collapse).

But, HYPP or not, it doesn't change the ownership question.BornToWin wrote:Update on Centerfold Kid, according to a post on Lucky Starz FB page, someone talked to the owner yesterday and the horse had HYPP. http://www.aqha.com/About/Content-Pages ... 063E4&_z=z

Meant to post this yesterday, but yesterday sort of got away from me.
Kathy, at whose ranch Cymple Rhythm currently resides, reported to Caroline that she was "perky and vocal" at breakfast yesterday morning. This is good news for a mare that was so weary and depressed.

Wish they had raced Ebloussant 1/3 as much as they worked her.

Different owners, so not sure what Mentor's loss would have to do with what the estate of the late Mr. Kronfeld would do with Ebby, who's part of a large dispersal.

That wouldn't have had anything to do with it, her owner died. Plus entries closed on August 1st.Catalina wrote:I wonder whether the decision to include her in the sale was made before or after Mentor Cane broke down.bare it all wrote:Wish they had raced Ebloussant 1/3 as much as they worked her.
