Has Spendthrift announced any mating plans for Beholder this year? She was barren to Gun Runner for last year, so she has had a break.

I know it would probably never happen, but I think it would be neat to see her bred to Medaglia D'Oro. Closest inbreeding there is 4X6 to Northern Dancer, but other than that, it's a complete outcross in the first 4 generations. But they have their own stallions coming out the wazoo, so I can't see them ever sending her to somewhere like Darley.

They did send her to Curlin twice and Gun Runner once, so they're apparently not totally against going outside thr fold.

I'd imagine they send her to one of their stallions. Maybe Bolt d'Oro after the success with Tamara. Could also imagine her going to Gun Gun (or one of his sons) or maybe Justify (or one of his sons..). Only speculations though.

Good point. They have so darn many boys there, it's hard to keep track of. I forgot that Cyberknife was on their roster. It could be, also, that they might have thought about Medaglia D'Oro for Beholder, but decided to go with his son, their own stallion, Bolt D'Oro, and they got a GI winner for their trouble!

Has any commercial breeding farm in North America (or I guess anywhere else for that matter) ever had that many at one time? I know Spendthrift has a revolving door where one or two come in and one or two go out, but they seem to maintain at all times a 100% occupancy in their stallion barn.

I think the old Spendthrift, with Leslie Coombs as the owner pre-bankruptcy, had a lot of stallions......both Seattle Slew and Affirmed started their stud careers there. But did they ever have 27 stud muffins there?

For Beholder, I'd say they go proven or one of their own first year stallions, since they said they were going to sell her foals after keeping the first 4. I mean who knows if they really will but that is what they said.

In 1986, Spendthrift had 40 stallions. In 1983, Gainesway had 46. I don't have all the stallion directories from the 80s so its possible they had more at some point or someone else did. Those are the highest that I personally know of. And just for fun, Claiborne was usually in 3rd with almost 30. *I should add the qualifier of those that are advertised as Spendthrift was not in 1983.
