The memorable race that I saw Medaglia D'Oro run in was when he finished 2nd to Candy Ride by something like 2 lengths (don't remember exactly what the margin was) in the 2003 Pacific Classic........and still broke the track record! Candy Ride was just indescribable that day!

Oh yeah, Candy Ride blew everyone’s socks off. Both turned out to be amazing sires! I forgot I also saw MDO run 2nd to Pleasantly Perfect in the Classic.

Medaglia D'Oro was sort of star-crossed when it came to 10f races. He ran in 5 of them at the highest level, but only won one, that sloppy 2002 Travers. He was second the other 4 times. Two of those were won by horses that freaked in one way or another. Candy Ride in the Pacific Classic, and Volponi in the 2002 BC Classic, and Volponi had never run a race like that before, and he never did again! His other 2 2nds at the distance both came at the hands of Pleasantly Perfect (2003 BC classic and 2004 DWC). Pleasantly Perfect wasn't a freaky kind of horse, but when he got a solid pace to run at, he was almost impossible to beat at 10f. He was just one of those specimens that was a TRUE mile-and-a-quarter horse! He got the pace set up he needed in the 2003 BCC and 2004 DWC, but when Ghostzapper and Roses In May just walked the dog in merry-go-round fashion in the 2004 BCC, the best Pleasantly Perfect could do was 3rd.

Medaglia D'Oro got kind of a bad rap for that record with lots of people saying he couldn't "get" 10f, which was ridiculous! That was totally debunked when he finished a close-up second in the 2002 Belmont Stakes at 12f! And that was won by another out-of-the-blue freakish performance by the longest shot to win the Belmont in its storied history! Medaglia D'Oro was just one unlucky horse!

I never saw MDO run.. I would give up my entire life to have been of age in the early 2000's and be able to see all these superstars run in person. I can only imagine how thrilling it was. Luckily there are videos, so I can experience a glimpse of how it was..

It is but its leaves some questions for me. Who is going to leave a mare open without a stallion contract through April 26th and hope they win the breeding? I guess they could do a foal share or something with someone who has an open mare.

Chrome is currently the Leading 2nd crop sire in Japan thanks to Wide Latour's stakes win. I hope his Japanese-bred offspring continue to move him forward in the standings.

Interestingly, although Chrome achieved only modest results with his US offspring, he has been an international success in Chile, Argentina, Russia and, of all places, Uzbekistan. One of Chrome's Kentucky bred colts, named Kabirkhan, is a national hero in Uzbekistan having won 8 of 9 races in dominant style. He just won a handicap in his first race in Dubai in excellent style and is being pointed toward the Dubai World Cup. Even though he would be a longshot, that's the stuff dreams are made of.

Yes, California Chrome is doing well, even if his babies may not be very precocious.

Wide Latour(JPN) is slated to run next in the G2 Tulip Sho 1600m turf at Hanshin on March 2nd.
