LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Churchill Downs announced the 150th Kentucky Derby will be the richest purse in Derby history with a guaranteed $5 million for the winner.
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

You'd collect about $5.60.
Is that really something you want to bet on?
Might as well bet that Baffert will never see any of the $5,000,000 purse.

So what would happen if the purse were a paltry $1m? Would the field be 20% the expected quality?

Are there folks on here looking to nominate a horse and if so did they not know this?

Are there any other trainers that this rule applies to other than the obvious?
Is it a rule set in stone for future years?

I dunno, but a win in the Santa Anita Derby plus a win in the Preakness and a favorite's shot at the Belmont in Saratoga sounds like a nice resume with most of year left, I'd certainly be tempted to go that route.
