Yes, because many/most of them have already done a lot, either on the track or as broodmares (or both), even if they haven't produced any really successful offspring. The sales can be a stressful environment for some and they deserve better in their old age.
You can only hope they land in good hands, like Desert Stormer did when she was offloaded in a sale at age 20. I don't know if she's still alive, but Dell Ridge Farm, where she lives, posted on FB about her 30th birthday in 2020. They said she was babysitting weanlings and hanging out with other pensioned mares, which is the kind of retirement she deserved.

She was Paynter's dam and was 24 when she was sold and died foaling at 25. The people that bought her, bought her to pension her but it unfortunately never had a chance to happen. That was Diamond A that sold her. Owner definitely needed the money, you know being a billionaire and all. I don't know if he is involved in racing anymore, I saw the farm was for sale in the past year, its the former Brookside(Allen Paulson's farm) and hasn't had a start since early 2021. Same with Brad Kelley, got to get those last couple thousand out of a horse instead of pensioning cause being a billionaire is rough.Justahorse wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2023 6:57 amI hope she doesn't end like I think tizso? Someone last year asked on that post if desert stormer was still living and it went unanswered

Last I knew, he was at Calumet. He stood a season or 2 at Lane's End, where he wasn't particularly well-received.

Ugh. I'm surprised Joseph Allen sold her in the first place, considering her family has done so much for him. Hopefully up in Alberta, she'll go to some better stallions than flippin Calumet sent her to, and then she can live out as a pensioner.

If he's sound enough it might be worth giving him to someone to retrain as a riding horse. He's still a young horse after all.

I'm pretty confident that lack of interest was probably a pretty good portion of it. He probably wants more money than stud farms are willing to pay even at auction. I also wonder if the owner has seen what Mr z and some of the other stallions have sold for
