Rich Strike is the first horse to sell at KeeHORA November 17.
Really hope it's not Saudi Arbaia because we'll literally never see him again.

I really think he RNAs, there is a slight part that thinks he might sell. But I just can't see someone paying an extraordinary amount of money for him, like if he goes for 2m, his owner should be happy. But does his owner overvalue his worth? Cause say he got a stud deal in the US, I just can't see him getting 200 mares. Maybe in the 150 range if he was priced at 10k, then he'd drop off like a rock, like Knicks Go did.
Of course I could be underestimating his value since he is a Kentucky Derby winner and that does mean a great deal to people. He just doesn't have a commercial sire and while he ran some decent races last year, he has only won 2 races and one was a claimer.
I am curious what other people think though.

Yeah don't think Calumet is going to be using their 7 breeding rights. Same with the Mr. Z breeding rights.brunanas wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2023 9:19 pmBourbonic Sells To Mexico’s Rancho Natoches At Keeneland November

Big Blue Kitten RNA
Bourbonic sold to Guillermo Elizondo Collaro
Surprised we haven't heard of Rich Strike being sold yet. I would imagine he goes to Saudi Arabia too. Or he'll be a $200,000 RNA
Mr Z is Saudia bound, Bourbonic is bound for Mexico

Under 10 (or even 5) is standard Calumet operating procedures.Akitaperson wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2023 10:31 pm
He only bred 1 mare in 2023 if he's got fertility issues it might be kinder to geld and send him to somewhere like the Horse Park or Old Friends.

Thank you. I'm so used to so many of the KY farms having large books that I thought the single mare was odd.

Oh it is odd. It makes zero sense at all but its been that way for years. Every year there are stallions that aren't used, sometimes its like 1/2 the roster.Akitaperson wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2023 10:43 pmFlanders wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2023 10:39 pmUnder 10 (or even 5) is standard Calumet operating procedures.Akitaperson wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2023 10:31 pm

Saudi Arabia offered the owner stud money for him last year and the owner rejected the offer. Japan also offered money and got rejected

Doug Oberg? The name doesn't ring any bells for me.
Edit: A quick Google search tells me he's a successful owner/breeder/trainer in Alberta. I hope she gives him a couple of nice offspring and then he pensions her. She is in foal to Hightail, who honestly isn't a bad sire considering he's spent most of his stud career at Calumet.

omg I was just typing this post about the same thing.
I'm going to be honest here. I liked the idea of Brad Kelley taking over Calumet at first but I have had no respect for the operation for awhile. I hate when I see operations dumping old mares in sales. Calumet sent through 20yo G2SW Teammate and sold her for 7k. And 19yo Poco Mas for 3.5k. He takes massive losses on every horse that goes through the ring. The mares always sell with a free breeding to one of the stallions that stand at Calumet. And they just churn out horses with no value. Like 90%+ of their horses that go through the sales are under 5k(usually under 2k).
if you go look at the November sale catalog (change to all sessions) and use the Consignor search with: Buckland Sales (Zach Madden), Agent XXVII
you will see what I mean

Yeah, I liked the kind of maverick thing seemed to be doing in the early stages of Calumet, but the business model can't be anything but $hit. If he was really supporting the stallions he stands by breeding plenty of decent mares to them and racing the offspring himself, I would have a lot more respect. Sure, he breeds a handful of mares to the Calumet stallions and does race some. It's just nothing that's going to make any difference. The only stallion he had who he really supported was English Channel, who was already established when he moved to Calumet.Flanders wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2023 12:57 amomg I was just typing this post about the same thing.

Re: Teammate, this article has a quote explains what Oberg was likely trying to do by buying a mare with Teammate's pedigree:

Doug believes strongly that the future success of Thoroughbred breeding programs in Alberta may be determined by the quality of the female side of the pedigree, “we’ve got to get better mares” and he tries to bring in mares that “I like, that fit with the stallions up here.”

At least Poco Mas went to Crane Thoroughbreds, they're a smaller family-run farm in PA that has raised some very nice horses.Flanders wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2023 12:57 amomg I was just typing this post about the same thing.

And since William Nicks bought the Storm Cat mare Colour the Wind I wouldn't be surprised if her 2yo turns into a G1 winner lol https://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/t ... for-nicks/
