I understand not selling Puca for 2.8m. She is a young mare. All 3 of her foals of racing age have blacktype. Mage maybe only has 1 G1 win, but he ran well in most of his races and he is racing next year. Dornoch looks like he is improving. Her yearling brought 1.2m. People will pay a lot to have a sibling(half or full) to a Kentucky Derby winner.

Yeah, I'm not sure what's with the bashing of Puca. She's a proven producer and a stakes winner herself, plus a half sister to Finnegan's Wake. Her female family is a bit light but also not the worst. Selling for $2.9m privately to Stewart is great for her sellers and he'll hopefully get some more decent runners from her.

People will shell out millions for fresh-off-the-track mares (who, granted, are usually MG1Ws or champs) who have zero foals on the ground and who there's no guarantee they'll be able to consistently produce foals. This is not even considering the likelihood of their offspring replicating them or being remotely profitable/successful in any way.

So I don't understand why $2.8 million for Puca is so absurd.

The one mare(hip 381) didn't even get a bid. But its crazy to me that like you said that mare sold for 2k, they have to pay the stud fee before they can sell her. Oscar Performance's stud fee was 20k in 2023. So she covered 10% of the stud fee? How does it make sense selling a mare for that much? I mean I suppose its possible they own a share in the stallion so didn't have to pay the stud fee.

her page isn't the beeeeeest, and she doesn't have any foals, but dang. not like she was pregnant to an unfashionable stallion, and she looks... okay?

ETA: not in foal, but still...? some people were bidding on her (got to $5,000) but retracted them.

and she too wasn't pregnant, so "at least" there's no stud fee to be paid. however price wise, she has a pretty bland page and her left (? i'm horrible with directions) looks questionable, so... that's a justifiable price, i guess.

I don't think Cave Brook has ever had stallions. John Little owns Cave Brook and he owns and bred, Gufo's dam, Floy, and was co-breeder of Gufo. He sold his interest in Gufo to his friend, Steve Cainelli, who is also co-breeder. So John Little bought the horse back, there are many farms in Kentucky that will stand a stallion like this for him.

It's typically the turf-bred horses that get very low bids. Both of the above mares are Irish-bred. If you have a turf mare you basically have to sell them at Tattersalls.

I have a distinct memory of seeing the ill-fated I Want Revenge go through the ring a few years ago; I was at some kind of cc function but stepped away to watch.

You could hear lots of "oohs and ahhs" and I think he did a lot of prancing. Was it the same for Gufo?

January is a long way off for a mare that dropped and already showing that very late term V look to the barrel
