what book are the stallions in? i wanna see who else is being offered as a stallion prospect but downloading the big pdf doesn't help because it never loads completelyFlanders wrote: ↑Fri Oct 27, 2023 9:34 pmJust cause you mentioned them, did you see in the Keeneland November sale, they have Big Blue Kitten and Mr. Z. And both are being sold with Seven Transferable NH Lifetime Breeding Rights to be Retained by Seller. What is the point? Not like they've ever bred to them anyway.Northport wrote: ↑Fri Oct 27, 2023 9:21 pm Had time to go over the list in full. My random takeaways:
Not surprised to see Army Mule so busy. The Hill n Dale contact I met at the Preakness said that by May they had people beating down the door to pay $20,000 to get their mares in to him.
Cupid's move probably was due to that big ol drop from 178 to 43.
Honor AP at 39 and Honor Code almost identical at 38. Still no idea why they never lowered Honor Code's fee, maybe they were holding out and hoping to sell him? idk.
Happy to see Karakontie getting 86 mares. Loved him as a racehorse. He is a consistently good stallion and love that Gainesway's gamble is paying off - at least compared to other turf stallion imports.
4 mares for Mastery... yeah.
*only* 111 mares for Mendelssohn... they have dropped his price again but he really does need a breakout horse asap. I can see him on the chopping block this time next year. That blue blood can only take him so far and Justify is really eating his lunch on the Scat Daddy legacy front.
If Nashville becomes the next breedshaping sire, I am afraid I am going to have to find a new sport to follow. I just... dont understand.
160 mares to Oscar Performance - excellent on the turf breeding front.
6 to Palace Malice. He must be a staff favourite at the farm because someone there clearly wants to keep him around.
47 for Runhappy, down from 144 last year and 56 from the year before. The sponsorship hype has worn off and I'm not sure how much Nutella Fella can turn that around.
44 for Silent Name, currently carrying the Ontario bred program on his increasingly senior back.
Union Rags got 43 mares. Crazy the cliff he has fallen off of, numbers and results wise. In 2020 he covered 111 mares for $60,000.
34 for Yoshida... I think WinStar will accept the first offer they get.
And... checking in on everyone's favourite tax write off...
Bal a Bali - 4
Big Blue Kitten - 1
Bravazo - 6
Channel Cat - 10
Hence - 0
Hightail - 33 (!!!)
Keen Ice - 30
Mr. Z - 0
Oxbow - 21
Producer - 0
Raison d'Etat - 1
Ransom the Moon - 11
True Timber - 2
Real Solution - 4
Looking forward to seeing the resulting progeny sell without reserve for $1,400 at KEESEPT25.

Those 2 are in Session 8, along with Bourbonic (hips 3153-3155), then Session 9 (hips 3589-3590) Frank Conversation and Noble Bird. So I would guess its the last book as those are the last 2 sessions. I should add that the November HORA catalog has a lot of racing or stallion prospects.

Sadly, they are probably taking years off his life. I thought Epicenter had been badly injured!!! Why so many mares?Flanders wrote: ↑Fri Oct 27, 2023 2:15 pmI echo the sentiment. In the articles they say "He quit finishing midway through the season". How many more mares were they going to send him???? They broke him mentally with the sheer number of mares or with whatever methods they used to "encourage" him to breed.
Stallions should be capped at 150.

I honestly think that has to be it. It just makes no sense otherwise. When I visited Kentucky in August, I visited Keeneland with my Grandpa and we drove past Calumet since it’s almost next door to the track. I was ranting about how the whole modern operation initially looked like a fun experiment of different/less popular bloodlines but now is just breeding garbage to garbage and selling it to an uninterested market for peanuts. My Grandpa was like “sounds like a billionaire needs to write millions off each year as a loss” and tbh it isn’t completely that off base. I wouldnt be surprised if they only accept stallion nominations via carrier pigeon. They seem intent on getting their coverings as close to zero as possible.

It is remarkable that the USTA is able to limit Standardbred stallions to 140 mares yet the JC yielded to the stud farms who complained at the mere suggestion of such a rule for Thoroughbreds. Perhaps it is the difference in the amount of money involved - the highest STB stud fee is $40k.
Here are the stallions that caught my eye going through the lower tiers of the list:
Done Talking - 30 single-hoovedly keeping TB breeding in SC alive, and I bet most of these are his owner's mares
Mineshaft - 26
Smarty Jones - 20 a respectable number for the old fellow
Eagle - 13 moved to Uruguay after this season
Big Brown - 12
Flying Honeypot - 12 was pulled up and vanned off in his final race in 2022 so it's good to see he found a soft landing
Freud - 10 he's still hanging around
Accelerate - 9 what is he doing at $10k next year?
Palace Malice - 6 should be out of KY soon
Morning Stride - 5 was pulled up and vanned off in his last race in March 2023 after a year-long layoff and was bought to stand in AZ
Visitant - 5 was retired to stud in 2023, returned to racing and after a couple decent efforts is running in the Lure Stakes tomorrow
Gio Ponti - 3 also surprised he's still in KY
Greatness - 3 the last Mr. Prospector
Time Bandit - 3 more like time traveler, this guy is 27! https://www.pedigreequery.com/time+bandit he's by Time for a Change out of La Voyageuse by Tentam
Flap Jack - 2 also pulled up/vanned off in his last March 2023 start but was scooped up to stand in AR
Stroll - 2
Denis of Cork - 1 this is a big drop and surprising to me since I see his babies all the time at Charles Town
Giacomo - 1
I'll Have Another - 1
Satans Irish Debut - 1 rarest pedigree award https://www.pedigreequery.com/satans+irish+debut
Sea All Watchin - 1 I believe this is the only color stallion on this report, of course breeding as a 3yo

My poor Honor A.P....I know his sire was hated by the market and ignored, but is that the only reason he’ bred 39 mares? I suppose it could be that he was unsound, but he was super talented and gorgeous .....seriously untalented horses have bred more mares than that. I think he’ll be a really good sire, but LE isn’t going to be able to keep standing him, so he’d better have major promising results to justify his continued residence there. Worse for him, in 2022, he bred 81 mares (down from 110) and had only 55 live foals.

okay so this might be a stretch but maybe not.... She was bought by Pin Oak last year. His digital cert. is with Pin Oak. I wonder if they are private standing him there as their only stallion? Because they didn't own him when he was racing.
Edit to add:
Look at this:
https://www.louisianabred.com/default.aspx?pid=274
There are 6 mares, Allsquare, Chatelet, Drunk Dial, Hennythelovepenny, Maritime Connection, and Wealthy Shipman who had foals in Lousiana in 2023 and are all owned by Pin Oak that were then bred back to Scalding. So they foaled in Louisiana and were shipped back to Kentucky to be covered, so that is 7 mares (the only 7 mares we know) out of 16 and all were owned by Pin Oak.

Yeah I guess that doesn't mean he is at their farm but we know they have stallion facilities. He could be standing privately somewhere else, farms definitely do that sometimes. But I would say if the known 8 out of 16 are all owned by Pin Oak, then they own him at least.mariasmon wrote: ↑Mon Oct 30, 2023 9:20 pmThat was my guess back in July.Flanders wrote: ↑Mon Oct 30, 2023 7:47 pmokay so this might be a stretch but maybe not.... There's a decent chance they have him at their Kentucky farm. Crestwood and Darby Dan seem to be the most popular farms to house a stallion who's mostly just covering his owner's mares. I don't think he's at either of those.Flanders wrote: ↑Mon Oct 30, 2023 9:29 pmYeah I guess that doesn't mean he is at their farm but we know they have stallion facilities. Question: The article says he covered 152 mares and lists them all. Do they know that all 152 of these mares actually got in foal? Or is it possible that he actually covered more mares than this but they didn’t include those that, for whatever reason, either failed to catch or suffered an early loss of pregnancy. The sheds have been closed for about 4 months now, I think, so they surely have definitive data on that by now. Or am I just confused?starrydreamer wrote: ↑Tue Oct 31, 2023 12:10 pmWell this makes it much easier to follow his offspring. He only covered 152 total. There is no way that all 152 mares got in foal/stayed in foal. They don't own those mares to give out that kind of information. They would have to contact everyone who bred a mare to him and say, Hey is your mare still in foal and can we release that information? People aren't going to be having that because a lot can change between now and foaling day. I mean they could say he got X% in foal when covering but they wouldn't know how many are still in foal.Missbeholder wrote: ↑Tue Oct 31, 2023 4:33 pmQuestion: The article says he covered 152 mares and lists them all. Sometimes the mare's owner will put in an early No Foal report in Jockey Club. Won't get a picture of his fertility until foaling season ends.
