What a miraculous recovery that Epicenter went from “we hope he makes it” to covering 250+ mares. I mean, at least he he sound-ish? I dont remember who was concerned about a lame West Will Power being shipped to Korea to cover mares, like there aren’t US farms getting lame ass horses to jump hundreds of mares. AND getting the sound ones to do it so often that they end up refusing to do so. And bonus points that all the above happened under one roof. Man. This sport can be hard to morally root for.

Also how crazy is it that the horse who covered 191 mares is now part of an insurance claim because he refuses to breed. Because, to me, a horse breeding 191 mares seems like he certainly can do the job willingly for at least a couple months. It’s just confusing and still kind of mysterious. Ive read both that he couldnt finish and also that he would refuse to jump mares altogether. I guess we wont really know until the report of live foals comes out next fall.

Oh the 7 mares are justified, I'm surprised he even saw that many. Outside of Saudi Crown he has sired no other stakes horse this year and his only other stakes winner died.
I have a very big soft spot for Always Dreaming because he is the only Kentucky Derby winner I've met in person (in Saratoga in 2017) and he was THE sweetest horse who couldn't decide if he wanted to get head scratches or eat his hay and kept wandering back and forth to do both.

Yeah or when they said, "he can't be turned out yet"....

I really wish I could remember more or find an article about it, though I highly doubt there was one. It was most likely "rumors" aka things that weren't going to be said officially. But back in the day when Woodman was super popular, he was covering a ton of mares (for the mid/late 90s) and also covering a lot when shuttling. But it made the horse hate life. He still did "his job" but I remembering reading accounts from people who went to Ashford, saying he looked bad, his coat was dull, he look overworked and depressed. The only things that stopped the big books was him going out of favor.

I think he just broke mentally. He couldn't handle it anymore and refused to complete a cover after a certain point(whether actually refusing to finish or refusing to cover at all). But he covered 191 mares plus how ever many additional covering for those mares. Anything on this RMB would be successful covers only. So he was slated to have who knows how many more mares. Its not going to be a fertility claim its most likely a loss of use claim.

The unparalleled greed and “if he can walk he can breed” mentality is disgusting. Epicenter’s screws in his serious condylar fracture surgical repair failed about a month after surgery, necessitating a second major surgery. Dr. Bramlage said he had never had that happen before. Poor horse should have had more time off to recover completely before being asked to breed.

When's the last time Into Mischief covered less than 200 mares?

Three Chimneys showing some restraint with Gun Runner

War Front I'd say that's more the product of age, declining fertility, and Coolmore abandoning ship vs Claiborne really being that conservative....

2012 for Into Mischief. and no, iirc Claiborne always limited his books to ~100.

War Front's fertility hasn't been great the past 2 years(I mean for 2022 and 2023 foals) and they've always kept his book size smaller. It depends with Claiborne, for the most part they are conservative but I've seen some in the past couple years that surprised me. I think Silver State and War of Will had a lot more than Claiborne's norm their first years.

All those NY farms worked together to get him and they really got him supported. I hope he does well.

I'll Have Another - 1

Yet they still have him listed at 10k for 2024. Hasn't the reality sunk in yet? California breeders aren't going to pay 10k to breed to him.

Had time to go over the list in full. My random takeaways:

Not surprised to see Army Mule so busy. The Hill n Dale contact I met at the Preakness said that by May they had people beating down the door to pay $20,000 to get their mares in to him.

Cupid's move probably was due to that big ol drop from 178 to 43.

Honor AP at 39 and Honor Code almost identical at 38. Still no idea why they never lowered Honor Code's fee, maybe they were holding out and hoping to sell him? idk.

Happy to see Karakontie getting 86 mares. Loved him as a racehorse. He is a consistently good stallion and love that Gainesway's gamble is paying off - at least compared to other turf stallion imports.

4 mares for Mastery... yeah.

*only* 111 mares for Mendelssohn... they have dropped his price again but he really does need a breakout horse asap. I can see him on the chopping block this time next year. That blue blood can only take him so far and Justify is really eating his lunch on the Scat Daddy legacy front.

If Nashville becomes the next breedshaping sire, I am afraid I am going to have to find a new sport to follow. I just... dont understand.

160 mares to Oscar Performance - excellent on the turf breeding front.

6 to Palace Malice. He must be a staff favourite at the farm because someone there clearly wants to keep him around.

47 for Runhappy, down from 144 last year and 56 from the year before. The sponsorship hype has worn off and I'm not sure how much Nutella Fella can turn that around.

44 for Silent Name, currently carrying the Ontario bred program on his increasingly senior back.

Union Rags got 43 mares. Crazy the cliff he has fallen off of, numbers and results wise. In 2020 he covered 111 mares for $60,000.

34 for Yoshida... I think WinStar will accept the first offer they get.

And... checking in on everyone's favourite tax write off...
Bal a Bali - 4
Big Blue Kitten - 1
Bravazo - 6
Channel Cat - 10
Hence - 0
Hightail - 33 (!!!)
Keen Ice - 30
Mr. Z - 0
Oxbow - 21
Producer - 0
Raison d'Etat - 1
Ransom the Moon - 11
True Timber - 2
Real Solution - 4

Looking forward to seeing the resulting progeny sell without reserve for $1,400 at KEESEPT25.

Report of Mares Bred Points to Slight Breeding Decline
https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing ... ng-decline

There were 14 stallions with a book size of 200 or more that covered a total of 3,213 mares in North America in 2023 as reported through Oct.18, which is 12% of all coverings reported. The 45 stallions with books of 150 or more covered 8,588 mares, which is 32% of all mares reported bred. For comparison, reports submitted by Oct.10, 2013, show that one stallion covered more than 200 mares in North America, which represented 0.6% of the total for that year. Those reports also show 19 stallions covered 150 or more with a total of 3,205 mares in the 2013 breeding season, which equates to 9.4% of all mares reported bred in 2013 as of Oct. 10.

brunanas wrote: Fri Oct 27, 2023 5:23 pm btw, i hope y'all understand that Golden Pal's 293 were INDIVIDUAL mares. say 10% needed second covers, that takes his number to about 323. of course he could have crazy fertility and barely had to cover any mares more than once, but the opposite also can be true. anyways, fuck you Coolmore.
I think you are way underestimating that 10%. I think easily its 2-3x that maybe more. Because a stallion with good fertility is only going to probably get 75% live foals. Sure some are lost in pregnancy but that happens a lot in early as pregnancy and then they can be rebred. Some mares take many covers just to get in foal. I pretty much guarantee when they had to pull Early Voting that the other first year boys were offered as replacements, if the owner wanted to go to one of them. I would guess he easily covered 400 times and probably much more.
yeah, honestly... when i was first typing out that comment, i had said something like ~25% but for whatever reason, i thought that i could be over exaggerating and wasn't sure if i should post it like that. but you're absolutely right. 400+ seems viable. and something none of us (i think) took into consideration is that not all mares have been reported as bred yet (JC estimates 2,500-3,500 are yet to be reported) so the number will go up. not by much, i guess, iirc the highest i've seen was like 20ish, but maybe i wouldn't be surprised if his RMB ends up at about 300. vile and disgusting.

what i hope the Laoban case taught people is that "helping" stallions absolutely is common practice. you have to be so naive to look at for example Into Mischief's numbers and be like that sounds perfectly plausible i'm sure he is always eager to jump another mare after doing that 300+ times per year since 2012!!!!. to me it was always so obvious they don't do these things naturally but so many people were shocked to learn there are things such as medications to make a stallion willing to breed.
and let's not get into how a lot of times they'll go to hell and below to restrict a mare and get her bred. oh well.
someone from the now semi-deceased HRN once said Scamshit and co. would breed their stallions to a three legged, five eyed mule if she came with a paycheck tied to her tail and that is absolutely true.

Just cause you mentioned them, did you see in the Keeneland November sale, they have Big Blue Kitten and Mr. Z. And both are being sold with Seven Transferable NH Lifetime Breeding Rights to be Retained by Seller. What is the point? Not like they've ever bred to them anyway.
