So this, “ He had an injury after that race, I believe in his left front pastern,” Glass said. “Dr. (Larry) Bramlage said it would take considerable time to heal, if it would heal at all.” So he has an injury to his left front pastern that may not ever heal so they send him to Korea? Wtf!
I feel like Bramlage is referring to the injury healing 100% and allowing the horse to be racing fit. Considering that so many stallions head to the breeding shed because of injury, it’s not quite that dramatic if a horse has a niggling problem that leaves him sound enough to comfortably cover mares and get turned out in a paddock, but can’t race again. Epicenter was miraculously able to cover mares this year, Justify has had sketchy looking feet his entire life, Into Mischief’s legs in general, etc.

I’m not happy either when I see horses go to Korea, given their cavalier attitude to slaughtering horses that aren’t in the top percentile of performers once their careers are done, but I don’t think WWP is being sent over there in a body cast with a one way ticket that just says “good luck”

Is there something similar to the jockey club reports to find how many mares were bred by stallions in Europe? Ireland and Great Britain, in particular

They do but its not free. Wetherbys has a Return of Mares report that is £69 (so almost $85 USD). https://weatherbysshop.co.uk/products/r ... mares-2023 Comes out on October 25th and would include all Irish and UK stallions. Sometimes after it comes out one of the UK racing media sites will put out an article about the most mares covered by flat and national hunt stallions.

I think it was last year that I was able to find Germany's for free. France I didn't have any luck with at the time because the site said they were updating it with the information and then I forgot to ever look again.

brunanas wrote: Tue Oct 03, 2023 8:57 pm very good points as always Flanders. honestly thinking about it makes me wonder if they had any hopes at all of getting a deal in Kentucky or if they just thought it was worth the shot even it was a 0,01% chance of a major farm being interested. and it's very true that Bernardini's sons are... something. at stud. i don't think he has any good sire son other than Stay Thirsty (who i didn't even remember being by Bernardini until i went to check his sons on the registry).
Nah yesterday I was going to respond to the one post on here asking about West Will Power, Somelikeithotbrown and Max Player and I just knew how I am and that I would be typing forever and I didn't have it in me. hahaha
I didn't think any of them had a chance to stand in Kentucky, at least not at any of the big farms. A lot of it is pedigree, being by stallions that are not sires of sires and can be considered non-commercial, like I said about WWP he was better the older he got(breeders hate that). Somelikeithotbrown is a turf horse(they only make exceptions to that rule sometimes and he isn't going to get it), Max Player was kind of a plodder, he could run okay sometimes but now that his sire was sold on, I just don't see a big farm in Kentucky taking a chance. I should add that, these horses COULD have gotten a spot maybe if their owners were willing to keep a significant ownership % and then supported them heavily at stud but a lot of racing owners just don't want to do that.

As for Bernardini, he is a fantastic broodmare sire and that happens sometimes, like how Secretariat and Buckpasser are viewed as great broodmare sires. He has another regional son who has REALLY good stats. He stands in New Mexico, Marking (108 foals of racing age, 81 starts, 58 winners, 8 SWS(7%). Slammed has been his best runner so far, she won a G2 and ran in the BC F/M Sprint last year but was retired earlier this year. He started out at 3.5k but because of his success, he has now made his way to 6k. The thing about Stay Thirsty is, he is just okay that is why he is in California. He wasn't good enough to stay in Kentucky but he is good for a regional market. And I hope he continues to do okay, as I like him.
I loved Marking - no one knows him, but he was incredibly talented; I’m glad he’s doing well in NM. I’m also glad Stay Thirsty has found a home in CA - what a fantastic horse he was. I’m hoping Mind Control will find a home in NY

Max Player To Enter Stud At Annestes Farms In New Jersey

If you are of the opinion that this MGSW with a decent female family shouldn't go to stud, don't worry because he won't get more than 20 mares a year.

He'll be the only graded-stakes winning stallion in NJ, and certainly competitive with the 3 others entering stud there in 2024 so far (Invader, Vindictive, Agujero).

i had never checked these stats but now out of curiosity i checked the distribution of stallions/mares bred by state (available here), and for 2022 it lists New Jersey as having 21 mares bred and 6 active stallions. however the only stallion listed as having bred mares in NJ in 2022 is Sea Wizard with 14. is this because the rest had their reports submitted late?

Yep that is the reason, people being late returning RMBs. I looked at the breeding stats for 2021 (cause 2022 isnt on there yet) and it only had 7 stallions, while the stats you linked showed 8. So they are late doing everything. I wonder if some wait to see if there are live foals before submitting the RMBs to avoid the RMB fee? Cause in quite a few cases the stallions only bred 1-3 mares and who knows who the 8th one was.

Sharp Azteca(USA) will be not only the first Freud son to stand at stud in Japan but also the first Freud baby to arrive in Japan.
He will stand at JBBA.
