Not TBs, but QH Racing just had their 1st publically sold million dollar yearing, a colt by Feature Mr. Jess

I think the more interesting part of his sale, is that Feature Mr Jess died 13 1/2 years ago, in Feb of 2009 from Laminitis. He was only 11. I thought originally there was a time limit on using frozen semen (something like a year). Apparently not any more.
Mr Pacmann set a record for a yearling racing American Quarter Horse sold at public auction on September 2, 2023, at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, when the hammer was brought down at $1 million.
The colt was purchased by Elite Racing, and was consigned by Jumonville Farms, Agent for Bunny and J.E. Jumonville, Jr.
He is the first Feature Me Jess Colt sold at Ruidoso in 10 years, and is out of the Stoli mare Faith And Courage, making him a half brother to stakes horses Jessalittlecourage ($183,023), Dashing With Courage ($135,483) and Blue Courage ($79,491).
Feature Mr Jess has sired the earners of more than $24.9 million, led by Heartswideopen ($1,885,283).
Another horse also brought a solid price, as Hip 278 Hott Favorite brought a final price of $725,000 from Hott Favorite Partners. He was consigned by Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches, LP.
The colt is a half-brother to champion Hotstepper ($1,336,359), Grade 1 winner Hotsempting ($682,793) and Grade 1-placed In Hott Pursuit ($358,218). He is sired by Favorite Cartel and is out of the Tres Seis mare Pandorum.
For preliminary results, including hip-by-hip prices, visit Stallionsearch’s website at http://stallionesearch.com/default.asp? ... &report=SS.

The 2 year after death rule is only for stallions(and mares) born in 2015 and later. So the ones born before can be used until they actually run out. Oh and awhile ago when I was looking at AQHA and frozen embryos/semen/embryo transfers, etc. I saw this facility that has figured out how to single out semen so that they can REALLY spread out the limited semen stock.

Interesting article, and yes ICSI is how they are still offering limited breedings to Feature Mr Jess

Makes you kind of wonder/fantisize if this were allowed in TBs..... how much would someone pay for the limited chance to breed a great mare now to Alydar? Northern Dancer?

Arrogate's legacy could have been extended with this technology..... were it allowed...

I am not opposed to AI. I am still seeing new youngsters sired by Favorite Trick, the late champion TB who has had a pretty profound impact on running QHs.
If that 2-year limitation had been in effect when FT tragically died young, we might not have enjoyed some of his best offspring.
I'm sure the connections of Alydar, Lawyer Ron, Dubai Millennium, Summer Bird, Scat Daddy or Arrogate would have embraced AI if given the chance.

Great minds think alike! I remember those listed in the BH at 500 apiece, but that was over 20 years ago.

Lots of awards given out, most are breeding related. Too many for me to type out.

Not sure if anyone else has any interest in the Wildenstein family, but the New York Times did and article/podcast on their art/racing empire and how they have used art sales to avoid paying taxes for the last 100+ years. It’s really interesting, theyre currently in French courts right now and face a potential fine of $500,000,000 in back taxes.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/17/podc ... n-art.html

You can download the episode for free on any podcast platform. I know not everyone likes the NYT but it’s not really a biased story, just an investigation into a really rich family who for 5 generations prided itself on mystery and secrecy.

This has little to do with the above besides being the Wildensteins. I know nothing about the art world but awhile ago, I stumbled on a UK art show on Youtube(probably illegally uploaded), where people submit works of art they have come across and try to get them proven as a work of art by an artist. No matter how many experts would say a piece of art was by an artist, if they had to go through Wildenstein for validation, it was always a no, its fake. Sometimes they would even say the work had to be destroyed, though I'm not sure that was ever done. In the comment section people were always saying things like, the Wildensteins' are going to get what is coming to them and how they couldn't wait for them to be pushed out of the art world. So I imagine that was about this case you posted above. I guess I should add that some were obviously not real works by whatever artist but it was a really interesting show. I'm sure it was made to be a little more compelling and dramatic than it really was, since it was a television show. But the techniques and science they used to prove a piece of art was authentic or fake was fascinating.

Yeah. They also had an additional smaller dispersal a few years ago, with Peter Brant buying most of the top lots.

Re: their stranglehold on the art world. At the end of that podcast they do say that now that French Classical and similar genres of art have waned in popularity, with modern art on the rise, the Wildensteins have lost a lot of their influence. Theyve also had to sell off a ton of their elite properties, so theyre definitely slipping. Not enough to see them shaking a tin cup any time soon, but it is a comeuppance of some kind.

Top German farm Gestut Ammerland is closing and dispersing it’s stock.

“ They founded it in 1989 and Ammerland homebreds have so far won 17 Group 1 around Europe and further afield. Its alumni include the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winners Hurricane Run and Waldgeist, world-travelling siblings Borgia and Boreal, and Classic stars Golden Lilac and the top sire Lope De Vega.”

This is something you really don't see.

Virginia Payson died in January 2023 but long before that she had made Christian Erickson, a longtime family friend, the trustee of her estate. He talks about how they are turning Payson Stud around and have every intention of having a small boutique broodmare band to keep the Payson name going in the sport.

https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing ... ayson-stud

Since he mentions the stallion barn having not been touched or used since they had stallions, I don't think it was quite as long as he says. I remember them standing stallions, in the mid-90s to early 00s at least. I believe they had Carr De Naskra, Lac Ouimet, Olympio. Salem Drive, St. Jovite.

Interesting article on some new Japanese broodmare purchases by Yulong Stud. The rate at which this operation is expanding is staggering. 600 mares in Australia, 100 in Europe, and theyre looking to buy 100 more. Here’s hoping he’s in it for the long haul and doesnt go the way of Patinack Farm, Phoenix Investments, John Dance, etc

Nice to see Yulong doing everything it can to support their stallion Lucky Vega.
