I was going through all the G1 winners I could think of just trying to find some that were still breeding but weren't in Japan lmao

Yeah, everyone's seen how much work Japan has put into improving its stock. It's still a crazy realization when you go back through your list of mares to check for breedings and suddenly half of them were exported to the same place

He raced until 9 and is now standing at Lex Stud, Japan.

Yeah, everyone's seen how much work Japan has put into improving its stock. It's still a crazy realization when you go back through your list of mares to check for breedings and suddenly half of them were exported to the same place

For anyone who loves racing in this country, it's a sad thing to see so much of our talented bloodstock leave here.

i mean... US racing will be really toast in a few years when they start bringing their progeny over for the big races. aaaand i won't really be upset about it.

To say our country will be toast in a few years when Japan brings over their horses and you won't mind really is pretty sad. So you won't mind the loss of income for those folks who depend on a healthy US thoroughbred industry? Those who work day to day with these animals on the farms and track? If this industry dies or is greatly diminished here it will be a sad day. I have voiced concerns about this over the years only to be told I am xenophobic, etc. Say what you want but the breeders/owners here see short term profit over long term success. Look how they sell off good stallions just because they don't want to give them time to develop. Once you sell off your quality buyers will go shopping elsewhere for a good horse and then your gravy train is gone.

From a NY Times article in 2015: “I buy the best and never sell” Yoshida explains that the United States and Europe are always willing to sell for the right price. “I only buy. I never sell except for some yearlings. I will never sell a good mare.”

American breeders are the quickest at giving up on a horse during it’s breeding life. If a mare or stallion isn’t producing fast enough it is likely to be sold overseas or to a smaller farm. Patience is a virtue, especially when it comes to living creatures involved in sport.

He is correct. 100%. These mares are and stallions are our treasures, and we let them go for a buck. Then lament the lack of superstars like we had in the 70's. Duh, wonder why? I don't. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Japanese racing, because they appreciate what this country seems to have forgotten. I work for a Japanese company whose vice president is connected to one of the Japanese Triple Crown winners. We talk racing all the time. I don't blame them for buying these mares. They appreciate what breeders here have forgotten. I blame the greedy folks here for letting their treasures leave the country. There are some who appreciate our special horses but they are growing fewer and fewer as the years go by.

It's hard to feel bad for a industry who is actively killing itself by breeding for the shed and not the track. Can't act shocked when Japan is buying good sound horses

Not saying I disagree with the above, but when a horse goes to sale, they will go to the highest bidder. Oftentimes that is Japan. It doesn't mean that North American or European breeders didn't want the horse. This applies to stallions as well, but a little differently as there's more to consider.
