Smarty has a grandson running in India. He's a 3yo named Quasar, and he's o/o Belle Jour, by Seeking the Dia. He's run in 2 races that seem to be part of the path to the Indian Derby and has a 2nd and 3rd.

Steve Budhoo claimed a horse out of the same race that Run Smart One was in Friday at Calder.
Now he has two that can run in the same $5,000 claimers -- a mile and up.
Run Smart One finished fourth on Friday.
I don't know what this means.
With a very small stable, I think it would be difficult for Budhoo to retire Run Smart One, if only for financial reasons.
My impression is that, despite some decent results recently, Run Smart One is barely competitive in the $5,000 claimers at Calder.

Have been trying to get in touch with Mr. Budhoo since the race, but now that he is training more horses it is a little more difficult. RSO looked good, just didn't have his usually kick. I am hoping that Mr. B will consider retirement SOON for RSO-he deserves it. He has been a warrior for his Daddy!!!!!! and should have a great retirement. I didn't know Mr. B claimed a horse out of that race, thanks for telling us.

Smarty's first foal this year is a WV-bred filly o/o Hug Me Please, born Jan. 24.

Run Smart One a good second in a$5,000 claimer at Calder.
I have to say that I am amazed at the professionalism of Run Smart One.
It's like he knows he doesn't have that much to give and is smart enough not to waste an extra step.
He is not bothered by tight quarters and will go inside into a small opening.
I would like to hear what Budhoo says but I think Run Smart One pretty much strategizes his own race and the jockey is pretty much a passenger.
The only other I can compare him to is Follow The Leader, who could have been great if not for injury.
I don't think Budhoo is going to retire Run Smart One because he is still an asset for a small stable,

I just talked to Mr. Budhoo and he certainly agrees with you about RSO being smart. As far as retirement, he says that everytime he thinks about retiring him, RSO races so great! but retirement is in his mind. I have to admit, I would miss him so much. But Mr B says we will be able to keep up with him. So I feel good knowing that Mr. Budhoo is, a least, thinking about retiring him. He really loves RSO!! and is aware that this race was #87 for RSO. Thank you for keeping up with RSO!!!! he is awesome!!!

I can't remember the name but it was a weird name-
Does Budhoo think Run Smart One has his own strategy for running a race -- or am I going overboard?
I do understand, however, that he is getting the most out of limited ability.
I think he has to stay inside and not get fanned wide -- because he just can't overcome that longer trip.
The smaller fields also help.
It is truly amazing.

Well, as far as RSO having his own strategy, I don't think Mr. B is ready to admit that but he did admit to RSO being very smart and knowing what he can do. But I didn't push that, I think you are right. He is smart like his Daddy and I did tell Mr. B that. He is going to send me a picture of RSO winning his last race-so if I can get my daughter over here when the picture comes, I will post it here. I am computer challenged when it comes to converting pictures to the internet!! RSO has always been a real worker, then when he was claimed in Florida it seemed it took him a long time to get use to Florida. It seems he just wants to get better. And it is the determination of RSO!!!!! Mr. B is a good trainer for him and he does say that RSO does pretty much what he wants to do. sounds like you are right!!!!!!

The comparison to Follow the Leader is right on! so many of the smarties especially the 1st crop had a great deal of talent but because of injuries never got to their full potential. I don't know a lot about horses, just that I love them!

I absolutely believe that many of the older runners figure what they have to do to protect themselves -- and to run well. There's a terrific race vid out there of the wonderful Gander running in a NY stakes race. He dumps his rider at the start but goes ahead and runs the race -- and it's quite obvious that Gander has a plan.

There's also a canny old gelding in Jane Smiley's Horse Heaven named Justa Bob. RSO is reminding me of him more and more.
