Isn't a major issue any horse he was the underbidder on? Isn't there a strong argument that the purchaser of those horses should get some kind of rebate?

Given the fluidity of bidding and the way bidders pop in and out, any "rebate" would be impossible to calculate with the certainty the law requires. And it's not a secret that bidders related to a new stallion sometimes bid up the price with no real interest in buying the horse. Unless the auctioneer was somehow complicit, I don't see any grounds for relief.

Oh, there are most definitely "grounds" it's just not clear anything would hold up.

A music legend who loved racing and horses. RIP. I remember watching his horse Heartlight No. 1 win on he was so excited!

Early on, Bacharach had horses with Whittingham. The best being Advance Guard, a SW, but Mirlivam and Bdashed could run some as well. Bacharach wasn’t Charlie’s favorite type of owner. Whittingham thought owners should be treated like mushrooms—kept in the dark and covered with manure. Bacharach used to make surprise visits to the barn in the mornings and soon advised Whittingham that maybe one of his underachievers needed to be wormed. Charlie, noting a lack of recent hits, advised Bacharach to worm his piano.

Soon Bacharach had his horses with a trainer named Pedro Marti who was solid but certainly didn’t have a lot of high profile clients. They came up with a really nice horse named No No who gets forgotten because he was a sprint specialist in the pre-BC era. No No was more horse than Marti was used to managing and so Bacharach moved him over to Frankel’s barn. After about a month of Frankel, Ol’ Charlie probably seemed like Mr. Rogers. I believe Bacharach’s next stop was Neil Drysdale who had been Whittingham’s assistant when Bacharach had horses with Charlie. Then the success with Mandella. I used to see Bacharach once a summer or so at Del Mar. Not too many years ago, he performed at the Belly Up Tavern which is walking distance from the track.

I met Burt B a few times at Santa Anita and actually was able to have some nice chats with him. Boy, was I starstruck! The last time I saw him was about 5 years ago, so he was at least pushing 90 then, but I couldn't take my eyes off of him!!

The last time I saw him, he was using Carla Gaines as his trainer. I don't know if he used her exclusively then or if there was anybody else working for him. I also don't know if she was training for him right up until the end.

When I read of his passing this AM, it put a real lump in my throat. He was a legendary musician, and a hell of a nice man! RIP!

Thanks for that little update, Flanders. It IS nice to know that he was, in fact, out there right up until he died . Nice that he went out at 94 with a stakes winner just a couple of weeks before he passed away!

When Commissioner King won the Saudi Derby the owner's representative said this was their first horse. So they are really new to racing. I assume you ask because they had a debut winner at Keeneland the other day. Saudi Crown was their first US starter. They seem to buy lower price horses mostly but sometimes go up to like 250k. He has bought under both his name, Faisal Mohammed AlQahtani, and FMQ Stables.

Maybe these deep-pocketed owners are finally starting to see that the emperor is buck naked when it comes to the commercial breeding industry.

I wonder why Mike Repole is no longer partnering with Vinnie Viola at the sales this year? Did they dissolve their partnership/ have a falling out?
