none that i'm aware of but i've seen a few with atrial fibrilation. it happens often and if there's anyone that 100% doubts the japanese are doing something "bad" that person is me but i really hope they look into whatever might be going on.

50% of Thoroughbreds experience some type of cardiac arrhythmia during racing or workouts. Japan just acknowledges that it happens.

I would agree with Flanders and SukiSatsuki here, even if that was the saddest Japanese Derby I've ever seen.
I've been following the Japanese racing for more than fifty years since I was a child.

Just to be clear, Skilfing died of ''acute heart failure''.
According to the JRA's research, there are about 5 horses per year on average who die of ''acute heart failure'' during racing in JRA.
Yesterday, one of those happened in the most prestigious G1 event for the 3yos, unfortunately and sadly.

As for ''atrial fibrilation'', this is nothing new, either.
There are about 34 horses per year on average who have troubles with ''atrial fibrilation'' during racing in JRA.
I believe that Efforia, 2021 Horse of the Year, who pulled up and retired immediately after the 2023 Kyoto Kinen, highlighted this disease recently.

Does anyone here remember Nehai Ceaser(JPN) who finished last in the the G1 Kikuka Sho due to ''atrial fibrilation''?
He won four graded races including the G1 Tenno Sho Autumn in the following year.

According to JRA, horses can get better from ''atrial fibrilation'' even without treatment in most cases.

Satono Crown(JPN)(Marju) sired his first G1 winner from his first crop, when his 3yo Tastiera(JPN) [o/o Partitura(JPN) by Manhattan Cafe(JPN)] won the G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) under Damian Lane on May 28th 2023.

Everyone seems to have a shot!!
But I’ve got to answer your question, Starine, haha!!
Let me pick six horses below.

Turf condition at Tokyo is likely to improve to good-to-firm this afternoon.
I do like Sodashi who has the speed. But it's for the first time she races in three weeks.
Schnell Meister should welcome the very firm, too. But he drew a bit outside.
I also like Gaia Force and Soul Rush who finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively, to Schnell Meister in the G2 Milers Cup last time out.
Serifos has the class.
Jack d'Or can wire, if the pace is set up slow in the early part of the race.
