I can't get over how lazy and/or uncreative early thoroughbred breeders were, although I am touche-ing myself since I know modern breeders can be as well.

Why on earth did horses race for multiple seasons without names? How can you just not name a horse? How do you get by with just "Filly by Hampton," 'Whalebone Mare," "Lord Clifden Daughter" in studbooks? Don't understand how hard it is to come up with a name.

i think in these cases they were named but names got lost in time. might be wrong though

yeah its weird they were allowed to race/breed without names. That was one of the parts I found interesting about Hampton and then that when he was named in November of his 2yo year, the best they could come up with was the racetrack he had just won at.

If they had registered names they would have names. Wetherbys has kept the General Stud Book since 1791 continuously.

There is no way they wouldn't know the names of these mares when they had weights for all the races from their sire. It more looks like whoever bred them didn't feel the need to name a female horse, as a lot of the dams aren't named either. "has vagina, doesn't deserve name"

I just realized the mares are by 2 different stallions named Hampton but my thoughts on the situation stay the same. I think it got less over time until the General Studbook must have made a rule that required naming.

Yes, but you still need a way to differentiate between "Whalebone Mare, 1, 2, 3, 4. . . " for breeding purposes--one would think.

Call me old fashioned but when my husband and I get introduced at a social gathering it’s only proper to say Mr. & Mrs. Todd “Smith”. I’m not offended by this at all.
