This may belong in the "whats to be gained?" category:

14yo h Cachupito (Sudden Thunder) is entered in Race 7 at Camarero this Friday (4/28/23). He last raced regularly in 2016, save for a one race comeback in 2021, where he finished 10th and last, 36 lengths back. 51 - 4-4-7, $23,834. He was in the War Horse database until the age of 12, and I finally thought we had him safely retired in '21. I'm sure even Cachupito wonders what in the hell is going on. Run safe old man...

For those interested, 14yo Cachupito finished 8th of 9. Gained a little steam in the backstretch, but got tired pretty quick. Kind of what you would expect from a 14yo? Hope they put him back in his comfy retirement home. At least he finished safely.

God willing they do send him back into retirement, hopefully it’s not the beginning of another campaign.

not wanting to disappoint but i wouldn’t be so sure he was in a retirement home. these horses just... stay there at the track, most times. this article talks about it — https://periodismoinvestigativo.com/202 ... erto-rico/ — even mentions Cachupito.

14yo h Cachupito (Sudden Thunder) ......

If he is still an intact HORSE, I wonder if he's going to be used for breeding? Not often you see 14yo entires still at a track.

There is no way that anyone is breeding that horse. If that had been going to, I think it would have happened during his first 5 year break from the track or the 2nd that was 2 years. He has only ran twice since 2016, once in 2021 and once in 2023.

I'm not so sure about that. It's not Kentucky or the mainland. What runs through the heads of these "horsemen" and owners in the orbit of Camarero is often borderline diabolical. We've seen it over and over again. Abusing race horses is quite common and obviously an acceptable practice in PR. Watching Cachupito walking into the gate yesterday was painful to see and it reminded me of O. Winston Links famous photograph "Old Maud bows to the Virginia Creeper" .

When I first began this thread several seasons ago now, there was a Camarero horse named Dr. Titilo. He was my first lesson in the suspect practices that take place at that track. At 13, and after 189 starts he was a wreck and died shortly after his finale. Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare has seen many of these hopeless souls come into their care, only to see them disintegrate and perish due to poor condition brought entirely about by greedy non-caring owners. Just recently, Camarero runners Reservado (105 starts) and Lady Joyfull (125 starts), were taken in and sadly died due to the prior neglect of their owners. Camarero is, or course, complicit in the demise of these animals - and so are the people who bet on them. If one considers the thousands and thousands of horses that have died on or near a race track, it becomes difficult to not see it as a nasty sport. But, they break down, we grieve and then slowly forget about them as there will be more races to watch. The circus never leaves town.

At any rate, don't be too terribly surprised if Cachupito sires a few runners before his time is up.

Considering the sort of owners in that callous environment, I wonder if Cachupito was just brought back because his owner was saying, 'yeah, my stallion is fast. I'll show you.'
Didn't turn out great, but perhaps the horse showed enough to interest a few of the owner's buddies. I kind of hope so, since maybe a breeding stallion will get a bit more food and vet care.

Considering the record of the horse, I can't even begin to fathom what was going on in the owners head. I don't really know what the future holds for Cachupito. I am sorry, however, that he is still being used up in Puerto Rico. So much of the nonsense that goes on there begins right here in the states. Many owners at tracks from Finger Lakes to Gulfstream send their tired and struggling horses to PR/Camarero after they can no longer earn even a few bucks in the lowest level claiming races here. All this tells me is that aside from getting rid of the horse for probably a pittance, they really don't care about what happens to the animal or how it will be treated. If a horse could think like a human, it would likely be the lowest feeling possible to be sent to PR for the remainder of your days. There are plenty of exciting things to see in responsible horse racing, but people damned well better know about the dark side that balances it out. Although we have them, there are precious too few breeders and owners who have reached out to bring back their horses from Camarero for a safe retirement in the states. Thankful beyond measure for them and for CTA.
