I think it is 10 years, depending on the "success" of the original name holder. It also depends on when the original died.

tachyon, is there any database other than JBIS and the Studbook to check the "status" of a horse? i was looking through sales toppers for previous years and in the majority of the time i struggle to find anything past their racing career. is there any website that would tell me if they're deceased, retired, etc? in case they're not standing stud or serving broodmare duty, i mean.

Obviously not tachyon but the studbook does say if a stallion/mare has died or is pensioned, at least it does for the 3 I checked, Deep Impact & Cesario(who died) and Azeri(who is pensioned). It doesn't appear to show that for racehorses though, as one of Cesario's daughters died at 3 and nothing is on there.

You may not imagine that such a super-comprehensive website exists anywhere in this world.
But information with netkeiba.com (together with its message boards for individual horses), umanity.com, and JRA official website (Japanese version) are helpful to some extent, too.

i think they don't usually update for racehorses. though iirc i saw one listed as deceased once, but it seems that they only really always update on stallions who stood at stud and on broodmares. so unfortunately the Studbook isn't any help for what i need
