The problem is that if there is to be a future for TB racing in the US, the market HAS to change. With so few fashionable bloodlines in play, eventually there will be no stallions to send a mare to that don't result in severe inbreeding. Japan ran into that with Sunday Silence, Australia with Danehill, and Europe with Sadler's Wells.
The difference is that they imported new lines. They were willing to take a chance on superior racehorses that may not have the best pedigrees. Where is the US going to get such new blood? Most other countries are focused on turf racing and we are definitely not.
Does Known Agenda (8 starts, 1 G1 win over nobody) deserve mares more than a proven racehorse like Arklow?
What about Magic On Tap (9 starts, 1 G2 win over less-than a stellar field?)
Or how about Rowayton (9 starts, no SW), Instagrand (9 starts, 1 G2w), or Maximus Mischief (4 starts, 1 G2w?
No, they don't, but they have the bloodlines for sales. And that is what has to change. Thoroughbred racing needs to become about racing again.
Field sizes are down everywhere as these fragile horses produce fragile offspring. Viewership of events and crowd sizes are miserable. So betting is becoming break-even except for rare longshot bombs. Fans are disappearing since it's pointless to get attached to 5 start superstars.
So what happens when the animal rights people continue to fight for racing to be banned? Who's going to fight against them? What sort of backlash would that bring about?
Owners and breeders only. But there will come a point when that is simply not enough.
The thoroughbred industry is not only shooting itself in the foot, it is putting up the green screen to keep people from seeing the inevitable outcome.
And then it won't matter who the horses were sired by---they'll all taste the same to Scruffy, Fido, and Spot.

It’s pretty amazing how much better a stallion’s pedigree gets when they sire some runners. Storm Cat wasn’t welcomed into the breeding industry with open arms, nor was Mr. Prospector or Into Mischief. Mr. Prospector had a half by Sea Bird who was a SW and was gelded early on because he was really hard to train. Maybe figuring out what he lost, that gelding, Gold Standard, was known to sulk in his later races. Tapit was somewhat more cordially welcomed but the industry wasn’t exactly holding its breath waiting to see his first crop. These horses got runners and it morphed from there. Had Sunday Silence stayed and sired runners he would have done just fine. He was owned by a breeder. His trouble was he had the demeanor of a stick of dynamite and hocks as crooked as most of the population of Washington D.C. Chrome would have churned out a living here except he was limited, ideally, to non-Tapits. Japan offered a lot of money for Sunday Silence and Chrome and it was too much to pass up.

I think that Chrome has done decently in the United States, considering the circumstances. I had never thought about the Tapit population angle. Even allowing for some inbreeding (as per usual), the amount of Pulpit already existing in the mainstream via Tapit and his sons is overwhelming. He has also been successful in Chile with a G1W two year old.

His daughter Janis Joplin recently returned to work after a promising juvenile season. She has yet to break her maiden but was GSP twice.

Chrome should have started at and probably still be at Harris Farms. If success warranted--like Skywalker, back in the day--maybe move to KY later. He was the Dumb Asses lottery ticket--at least Perry Martin's and so here we are. I'm sure he's fine and I actually hope he stays there the rest of his life, but there were more reasons than money to keep him stateside and specifically in CA.

Yeah, I’ve always liked him too. I think I bet him to win just about all of those 2nd’s. When he came up empty in that race at TUP, I was hoping he’d be retired. Sounds like the owner is going to do right by him. Some owners get it.

About time he was retired
