Japan's jump legend
Oju Chosan(JPN)(Stay Gold), 11yo, will be retired to be a stallion at Bando Bokujo (Farm) in Hokkaido after his swansong in the Jump-G1 Nakayama Daishogai on Dec 24th 2022.
He will have his retirement ceremony at Nakayama on that day!
Yay! I'm so glad they found him a place at stud, was worried he'd be consigned to use as a riding school horse lol. He's such an asset to the breed as a steeplechasing stallion and I love his pedigree with Hail to Reason on both sides. Hopefully some of his babies will make it to the European sales, would love to see one conquer Cheltenham or Aintree
.
How many horses in Japan are bred specifically with jumps racing in mind? I assume (perhaps wrongly) that most of the jumps horses there transitioned from flat racing but would Oju Chosan attract mares from breeders intending to produce a chaser like him?
I think that almost all of thoroughbreds in Japan are bred with flat racing in mind (personally I've never heard of any thoroughbred who is bred solely for jump racing actually in Japan).
And there's no stallion in Japan who is specialized for jump racing.
Such major flat sires with stamina influence as Stay Gold, Deep Impact, Heart's Cry, King Kamehameha, Rulership etc. could be good jump sires as well.
But I will not be surprised if some breeders bring broodmares to Oju Chosan dreaming of a jump star like him in the future even if he may also sire some credible stayers on flat.
