I really do appreciate connections pretending all year like they actually considered racing him at 5. Good for the fans to build up some misguided hope that a talented horse would race long enough to actually enter the public conscience. A real people's horse.

At least with Baaeed and Frankel you knew precisely when the end would be and connections never pretended otherwise.

Interested to see what the 2.5% share in him will go for. Not even sure where to begin in valuing a clearly talented horse that only raced 6 times, none of them in Triple Crown races. $50mil? more?

Sadly, no surprise……he was here, and then he was gone, just like that

I’m glad I never got attached to him
Yep. Appreciated his talent, didn’t add him to my Stable Mail because there was no point.

Sad, but true.

I was and still am devastated that Godolphin retired Bernardini before he’d even reached his prime. I know how hard it must be for Flightline’s fans …I’m sorry, it sucks.

Oh god that will be all three jewel winners gone. I dunno who would have to stand him keen ice hasn’t really done anything to be thought of a sire of sires. Hopefully they keep running maybe he will improve

I literally cannot see any halfway decent offer coming from anywhere except Japan. They are the only jurisdiction that has the interest AND the financial backing to buy a (newly retired) Kentucky Derby winner. I would be interested to see Rich Strike try the Saudi Cup, that race track has such a long home straight, could suit a closer like him. If Emblem Road can grind home there, anyone can.

That’s what he needs a long homestretch and decent horses to run against

what's your thing with Rich Strike? he won the KYD and was 4th in a competitive BCC. he is a good horse. "Keen Ice hasn't really done anything to be thought of as a sire of sires" maaaaaybe because his older foals are only... 3yos? if we used this line of thought, we wouldn't have, you know, Tapit?

can we start trying to guess a stud fee? i say, at the very least, $100,000?
edit: there are rumors on twitter (so take that with an EXTRA grain of salt) that before the Classic there was talk of it being $150k...?

Well, I'm disappointed, especially as I live in Southern California and might have had a chance to see him again, but this really is a case of "What does he have to prove/what more could he prove?" I remember what a football coach who preferred to run the ball said about the pass--"Three things can happen and two of them are bad." Same could be said of racing him again.
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

🤷‍♀️ If he didn’t have a horrible jockey and sore loser trainer I might like him more and it’s a shame we do have tapit around love him as much as I do shouldn’t have been bred we don’t need any more unsound horses. Isn’t in Germany you have to rave for a set amount of time to be considered for the shed? We need that here

what the hell does the fact his jockey is reckless and his trainer is an idiot have anything to do with him? using that as an excuse to hate a horse is just... stupid. and yeaaaah, maybe the world would be a better place without Tapit's influence. or ya know, without the crazy horses "like Rich Strike" going to the breeding shed. it's not like a certain psycho sired a certain... what was his name? Monday Silence? Loud Sunday?

i say at least $100k+, but i believe Lane's End puts a good limit on their books from what i've seen. not that this is small by any means, but not over 200 perhaps?

I'd be more disappointed if he was a 3 year old, but as the horse was denied a 2 year old campaign due to what looks to be a serious injury (the scarring is significant), I don't begrudge them the retirement.

The industry is what it is. He's turning 5. The pressure had to be immense to preserve his stud value and not lose a year in revenue, combined with the impossible task of pleasing fans and critics or the disaster of a breakdown or accident.

Until the ponzi scheme that is the breeding part of the industry receives a correction, those financial realities will prevail. The best we can hope for is for horses w like Medina Spirit, Chrome and Rich Strike to outperform their unfashionable pedigrees.
