Is this the first time the F&M Turf has been run at Keeneland at this distance? Easy to set a record when it's the first time.

No, nobody who isn't already a horse racing fan remembers Arrogate and Ghostzapper. The last time horse racing was mainstream popular was the 1970s so the last great horse of reference is Secretariat.

I mean more the announcers etc., and the people in the know who aren't paid to say it, but surely American Pharoah is the most recent popular touchstone?Miss Woodford wrote: ↑Sat Nov 05, 2022 2:13 pm

Secreteriat won the triple crown and Flightline never ran in a triple crown race. Secretariat was also good on turf and Flighline will never run on turf. There are better comparisons to be made.

I think they mean by dominating a race. Trying to get non horse racing fans, who KNOW Secretariat, excited about his huge Pacific Classic romp and hype for the Classic. And lets be real, Secretariat is by far the most popular racehorse that every household knows. Id be shocked if non horse racing people even know American Pharoah or Justify.Palace Malice wrote: ↑Sat Nov 05, 2022 2:14 pmSecreteriat won the triple crown and Flightline never ran in a triple crown race. Not even close to Secretariat. For the general public it's Secretariat, Seabiscuit, maaaaybe Man O'War, a huge step down, then AP/Zenyatta/Rachel/Barbaro/et al.Tessablue wrote: ↑Sat Nov 05, 2022 2:14 pmI mean more the announcers etc., and the people in the know who aren't paid to say it, but surely American Pharoah is the most recent popular touchstone?Miss Woodford wrote: ↑Sat Nov 05, 2022 2:13 pm

The Triple Crown is known by regular citizens, I suspect that at least they are aware of American Pharoah, as the first TC winner in nearly 4 decades.
