They buy, breed, and sell with so little rhyme or reason and I feel like the underlings must go crazy following orders that make no sense. Stallions are acquired, priced with fees that make no sense, cover random/borderline garbage mares that are almost all owned by Calumet, then the progeny are sold at the sales for four figures and usually at a huge loss. They do so in such large quantities that obviously they do get G1 horses and a fkn Derby winner, but it's just really baffling.Flanders wrote: ↑Thu Nov 03, 2022 7:22 am Did anyone else notice the Calumet stallion ads in the Friday Breeders Cup program(they are also in Saturday's program)? The one is just a text ad and only mentions the same 4 stallions that are in the photo ad a few pages later. The photo ad says "Calumet Farm 2023 Stallion Roster" and only has 4 stallions. Isn't that weird? Like they have 15 stallions but only Keen Ice, Oxbow, Ransom The Moon and Hightail are mentioned in their 2023 stallion roster ad. No wonder their stallions don't get mares.

I've been to Calumet. Toured the farm in 2014 in a tour organized through the Kentucky horse park. I kinda got the impression that was an exclusive to the Kentucky horse park farm tours kinda thing. it was a complete surprise. I knew ahead of time I'd be visiting three farms but wasn't told which three

Definitely didnt forget him, but was too lazy to google how to spell his name, haha. He also didnt run quite as notable an operation when he had Calumet banner, so it is hard to include him in the comparison. Most of his best horses were before he bought Calumet. He was integral tho in restoring and renovating the infratstucture of the farm itself.

I'm very interested to see what sort of first book Flightline gets; I remember when American Pharoah retired to stud, many claimed that his first book was the best first book they had ever seen. Justify and Arrogate had similar quality in their first years.
But considering his longevity and the fact that Into Mischief and Gun Runner and Quality Road, etc, are still alive and proven, will he get the very best mares out of the gate? Or will his first book be more comparable to say, Gun Runner or Charleton? I do expect it to be the former, breeders do love their brilliance.
