The rise of Sunday Silence

Damn. He and Symboli Kris S were two of my favorites when I first started to follow Japanese racing.

Both Zenno Rob Roy(JPN) and Symboli Kris S(USA) were JRA’s Horse of the Year, trained by Kazuo Fujisawa.
Symboli Kris S, massive Kris S colt, became an excellent sire and probably an influential sire of sires, too, represented by Epiphaneia(JPN) and Le Vent Se Leve(JPN).
On the other hand, Zenno Rob Roy’s success at stud was relatively modest, considering his brilliant race record and pedigree.
I still wonder if he could have more success if he stood in the states.

The chestnut in the Tenno Sho was Lohengrin, right? I ADORED Singspiel, so I tracked down as many of his foals as I could, and Lohengrin was one of them.

Yes!!!

That was Lohengrin(JPN) who set the pace in the 2004 Tenno Sho Autumn under Shadai silk.
The 4-time G2 winner and the runner-up in the G1 (Prix du Moulin de Longchamp) was Teruya Yoshida’s favorite horse.
It was in 1995 when Teruya purchased French filly Carling(FR).
Teruya raced her in France and brought to Japan when she was in foal to Singspiel(IRE), the champion & MG1winner on either surface including the 1996 Japan Cup, in 1998.
At stud in Japan, Lohengrin was a successful sire, represented by the 3-time G1winner Logotype(JPN) who is now standing at Shadai Stallion Station.
Lohengrin is not officially retired from stud duty yet, but he is believed to have already been pensioned at Shadai Bluegrass Farm now.

Nikiya(USA)[1993M. Nureyev(USA) x Reluctant Guest(USA)], the dam of the great Gold Allure(JPN)(Sunday Silence), died of old age at Haruya Yoshida's Oiwake Farm today.
She was the granddam of G1 winner Persian Knight(JPN), too.
May she rest in peace.

I believe that Heart's Cry is underrated like almost all of the Sunday Silence sons are.

Continuous(JPN) won the G3 Prix Thomas Byron under Ryan Moore to stay unbeaten at Saint-Cloud on Oct 1st 2022.

It was a shame that Continuous' victory was overshadowed by the disgraceful incident (Soumillon's elbows).
He is a very rare Heart's Cry offspring that is trained in Europe.

Believe(JPN) became the 31st daughter of Sunday Silence(USA) to produce one or more G1 winners worldwide, when her 7yo horse Gendarme(USA)[by Kitten's Joy(USA)] won the G1 Sprinters Stakes 1200m turf at Nakayama on Oct 2nd 2022.
Believe herself was the dual G1 winner (2002 Sprinters Stakes & 2003 Takamatsunomiya Kinen).

It will be very sad if Yoshida leaves the US without covering some of the TOP dirt broodmares in the US....

But I know well that Sunday Silence descendants have to show more results on the conventional dirt first in order to deny superstitions that Sunday Silence had no way to be a useful stallion in the US.
I don't imagine that breeders in the US will be convinced without the facts.
Orfevre mare Marche Lorraine won the BC Distaff last year.
But, obviously, her gallant win was not good enough to convince experts.
Okay that Distaff was nothing but a bizarre race that was led by a ridiculous pace....

So I always hope that Japanese horse people bring very top contenders, of the turf or the dirt, to the biggest dirt races in the US, the Kentucky Derby and/or the BC Classic, to restore Sunday Silence’s honor.

Let's now forget about turf races!! (haha!)
I would love to see Equinox run in the BC Classic next year!!

King Halo(JPN), Dancing Brave(USA) x Goodbye Halo(USA), became an excellent broodmare sire in Japan.
