I guess their “ winners” and stallions make up for these multimillion dollar losses?

For Coolmore, for sure. For the "Avengers"... idk man. From what I can remember, the only stallion that all those partners owned together from start to finish that has gone to stud for a high fee is Charlatan. Starlight and Madaket/Head of Plains had shares Justify and Authentic, while SF Racing, Fred Hertrich, John Fielding, and Golconda Stables sold their shares in Authentic to Spendthrift before the Santa Anita Derby, definitely for a profit but probably not as profitable as 250 mares a year for $75,000 for two or three years.

i've looked into their purchases once and most of them don't work out. their thing literally is making stallions, so once they're deemed "not stallion material" they're either resold or sent to the claiming ranks. idk how they keep themselves alive in this sport with so many horses not paying half of their purchase price, let alone all training fees etc.

Its why they buy horses as a partnership, as opposed to buying horses by themselves. Also by working together they don't have to bid against each other on horses. Sometimes they talk the sellers into staying in on horses and being part of the partnership, so they don't have to pay as much to buy the horse. They are all rich so if they were each going to spend X million a year to buy horses, going in together means they can buy more and have a better chance of getting that big time stallion prospect.

Most of the expensive young horses bought at auction aren't going to make their purchase price back. I started to do a personal project a year or so ago but the scope of it soon ballooned out of what I wanted to do. I thought it would be interesting to go back over just the $1,000,000+ weanlings/yearlings/2yos that sold in the US since 2001. But the number of horses that it ended up being was staggering. So then I cut it back to just $2m+ and it was still a ton, I just made myself finish it.

114 yearlings
total price : $370,750,000
earnings: approximately $16,206,255 (I could not find earnings for a few horses after were sold to Saudi Arabia, etc)
2 millionaires (one earned $2m, the other $2.5m)
1 Champion
4 G1SWs (including the Champion) / 3 G1p
7 G2 / 2 G2p
4 G3 / 6 G3p
5 SW / 4 Sp
2 were unnamed, including a current 2yo. The other died at 2 before she could be named.
20 Unraced (including 2 unnamed)
0 earned their purchase price back on the track

If the money spent is completely ignored the stats aren't bad. Its almost 13% GSWs, 18% SWs and 30% SHs.

She's by Midnight Lute, who is not commercial (although IMO underrated).
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

Not being by a commercial sire doesn't hurt mares the way it does stallions, but Midnight Lute has been decent enough to stay at Hill N Dale his entire career.

She sold for $5 million in 2020. I would imagine she'd be around that again.

As for Midnight Lute as a broodmare sire, his first crop was born in 2010. So he hasn't had a ton of starters as a broodmare sire. He has had 180 starters, 107 winners, 7 SWs, earnings of $8,299,513.

2022 is the first year he has appeared on the Leading Broodmare Sire list. 5 of the stakes winners were new this year, so as his daughters get older and have more starters, his numbers should improve. Midnight Memories might be his best as a broodmare sire so far, its really hard to find names.

I could see Pope wanting to add her to her already sparkling group of star mares.
