I'm going with never.
I've been trying to come up with a list of horses that were even retired to a stud fee of 100k+. Its pretty rare, obviously the 2 Triple Crown winners. Before that I can only come up with Ghostzapper in 2006, Smarty Jones in 2005, Empire Maker in 2004, Point Given in 2002, and Fusaichi Pegasus in 2001. The only one I can come up with in the 90s was, I *think* Easy Goer started at 100k in 1991. Before that, no clue. Obviously I might be forgetting someone. I almost forgot to put Empire Maker on the list.
how much did Secretariat stand for?
After some googling, I found this article. Looks like up to $100,000? Interesting read, regardless!

Do European horses count? Frankel started at £125k and Giant's Causeway (who meets the criteria for not winning a classic race nor a Breeders Cup race) at IR£ 100k.

That's not a published stud fee though. That is just what someone was willing to pay to try and get a breeding. I tried checking his stud fee in 3 different stallion register books during his stud career and he never had a stud fee listed, I do not have a 1974 stallion register. My searches on the internet haven't provided answers. I found the same article you did. I have a feeling he didn't have a public stud fee because he was only bred to 37 mares his first year at stud and the shareholders probably used them. A lot of stallions were listed a private because they bred so few mares, their books were always full so the farms never had to actually publish a stud fee because there were no spots to sell in the stallion's book.

I didn't even try to do any International stallions. I also don't remember European stallions fees as much as the US ones and then I'd have to try and convert Japanese fees to US. I do know that Dubai Millennium would fit the £100k and he didn't win the BCC or a Classic Race.

The Racing Post has stud fee histories for both European and American stallions going back 20+ years https://www.racingpost.com/profile/hors ... ee-history

$15,000? good luck filling that book... wasn't expecting more than $10,000. his only attribute is absolute speed over short distances, might get you, um.... a quarter horse Triple Crown winner?

surprised to not see Country Grammer there. also, what's the thing with Tourist? awaiting a decision from a korean stud farm?
Couldn't agree more about Nashville. He came in much higher than I anticipated. You have Idol, who is a Grade 1 winner at $10,000 and Independence Hall who is a Grade 2 winner at $10,000.

As the original asker of the question… im going to say nah European horses don’t really count. The Guineas and Derby are definitely important and stallion making races, though the Derby is starting to wane, but the St Leger almost devalues any flat stallion prospects. If you want to charge over $100,000, the English Triple Crown would have to be on the line in order to bother running your colt. We also cant really hold it against any of them that they hardly ever win the BCC. They are almost all bred to run on grass, at least in their close up pedigrees.

They do have a big finale race like the Arc (and to a much lesser extent, the Champion Stakes), so you can see how that would add a boost I guess. Though even a phenom like Sea the Stars only started out at €85,000.

If we did include Euros though, Giant’s Causeway would fit the bill I suppose, but barely. Poor guy was 2nd in two different Guineas and the BCC, but won literally everything else. Frankel won the English 2,000 Guineas, so he wouldn’t count.

i also hope Speightstown gets pensioned soon... he'll be 25 next year covering quite big books for his age. 89 this year. and we know damn well WinSh*t doesn't spare their stallions who aren't willing to breed...
I also expect Claiborne to lower War Front’s fee to around this as well. $70-80k

Taylor Made:
Idol - $10,000 (NEW)
Instagrand - $7,500 (same)
Instilled Regard - $7,500 (same)
Knicks Go - $30,000 (same)
Not This Time - $135,000 ($75,000)
Rowayton - $7,500 (private)
Tacitus - $10,000 (same)

Midnight Storm was moved to California
Mshawish is still on their site but was not in the article.

If someone can find a 2022 stud fee for Rowayton, I can fix it but all I can find is To Be Announced or Private. He had moved to Taylor Made for the 2022 season, he has stood in Pennsylvania in 2021 for 5k. It almost feels like they kind of forgot about him, since his Bloodhorse page says New To Pennsylvania for 2021! and his 2022 stud fee is To Be Announced Live Foal / Stands & Nurses. https://www.bloodhorse.com/stallion-reg ... 0/rowayton

2023 Fee (2022 Fee)
Medaglia d’Oro $100,000 ($100,000)
Essential Quality $75,000 ($75,000)
Street Sense $75,000 ($75,000)
Nyquist $55,000 ($55,000)
Maxfield $40,000 ($40,000)
Hard Spun $35,000 ($35,000)
Midshipman $20,000 ($10,000)
Speaker's Corner $20,000 (NEW)
Mystic Guide $15,000 (NEW)
Frosted $10,000 ($20,000)
Enticed $5,000 ($5,000)

I know $100,000 is a ton of money but tbh that seems like a reasonable deal for an incredible stallion who isn’t getting any younger. Also about time Frosted had his fee dropped to a reasonable level, he is simply not the stallion they hoped we would be

I just realized Street Boss and Astern both aren't listed, neither are listed as US stallions on Darley's site either. They are both on Darley's Australia roster though. Astern doesn't surprise me but I thought Street Boss was a solid sire in the US. I guess he is going to be 19, so if they were going to stop shuttling, it made more sense to leave him in Australia where his stud fee is significantly higher.

Oh yeah, I totally missed Street Boss. I can’t blame them for keeping the older guy there, his fee is $77,000 there vs $15,000 here. He’s also really taken the mantel over for Street Cry over there. Also, one word: Anamoe.

Yes, Easy Goer entered stud at $100,000. His was the highest incoming fee of the 1990s
Cigar started at $75,000, AP Indy at $50,000

Glad that it looks like Giant's Causeway got another good stallion son later in his career. He came in hot with Shamardal but then didn't really have a successor in the US.

Regarding Life is Good’s stud fee, I know everyone is thinking it but I haven’t really seen it mentioned in this thread: the $100k has to be the Into Mischief factor.

Depending on how LIG does in the Classic, WinStar could certainly make a case for him as Into Mischief’s best son. Authentic might have something to say about that but I do think if LIG wins the Classic, I’d give him the nod… probably even if he just runs well.

Authentic never looked “brilliant” to me but Life is Good has certainly had his races. Of course his stud fee doesn’t really have anything to do with Authentic.

Anyway. He’s overpriced for sure. At $100k he ought to break all those records that Gun Runner just set.

Ghostzapper was the one I knew of. Retiring at $100k is more common than I thought.

if he is to retire this year (let's be honest, it will probably happen) and having won the BCC (also a strong possibility), what do you guys guess Flightline's fee will be? also around $100k? higher? lower?
