Thanks! I love this. I had no idea any stud farms did this and it makes me really happy that at least one does.Mylute wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 9:38 pm Article about Japan and his "girlfriend" Felora, among other things. Thanks for sharing this. I had no idea some stud farms employed this method.Mylute wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 9:38 pm Article about Japan and his "girlfriend" Felora, among other things. Thete is a cute picture of them were he does his best Totilas Breyer mold impression.

From what I gathered from the article, it's possible no one else does.
IMHO, it make so much sense. Horses are social, herd animals, and keeping one isolated from engaging in interactions with another horse does not seem to be a recipe for keeping them happy...or sane. It goes against millions of years of evolution.
Maybe if Dynaformer or Halo had been allowed to have a mare of their own, they wouldn't have occasionally tried to maim their handlers.

I may be wrong, but I always thought one reason stallions were kept kept solo was to eliminate the risk of getting kicked by another horse. Obviously, they can find plenty of ways to injure themselves alone in their paddock or stall, but keeping them separate eliminates one possible risk factor.
I seem to recall that one tactic they tried with War Emblem, out of sheer desperation, was to put him in a paddock with mares they wanted him to breed. Anyone else remember that?

After TC winner Assault turned out to be apparently infertile, King Ranch gave him his own herd of Quarter Horse mares. Left to his own devices he managed to sire two fillies, and through them he still has many living AQHA descendants. Like this handsome 5x-great-grandson Gotta Lotta Gold, who stands at stud in New Zealand.

I think you're right - it's the injury potential. Farms would probably encase their stallions in bubble wrap if they could.mariasmon wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 11:07 pm I may be wrong, but I always thought one reason stallions were kept kept solo was to eliminate the risk of getting kicked by another horse. I don't know about War Emblem, but I recall reading that King Ranch turned out Assault - who was supposed to be sterile - with some quarter horse mares, and he is said to have sired a few foals that way.

Being kicked by a mare is probably the factor that other stud farms would say is a risk not worth taking, even if the horse would be happier.
I would presume that the German farm carefully chooses a placid mare to place with the stallion, and conducts some across-a-fence introduction to see if they get along before they are released together. Still doesn't make it 100% safe, but then no horse is ever 100% safe, since they still manage to injure themselves all by their lonesome.

Gotta Lotta Gold is very attractive, although his conformation looks more like working/reining Quarter, and less like running Quarter, which I thought we would see with a TC winner in the pedigree.

Brody's Cause has been moved from Spendthrift to Equistar Training and Breeding in Pennsylvania and will stand there for $3,500.

Assault's QH descendants are all cutting or reining bred. Makes sense since King Ranch bred mostly cow horses. Gotta Lotta Gold has some very old QH racing lines on his damside as well as New Zealand TBs but his pedigree is mainly Australian/NZ working horses. https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/gotta+lotta+goldBaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 26, 2022 2:51 pm Gotta Lotta Gold is very attractive, although his conformation looks more like working/reining Quarter, and less like running Quarter, which I though we would see with a TC winner in the pedigree.
Assault's main contribution to QHs in the USA was through his grandson Johnny Bean, who shows up in the pedigree of horses like early 2010s horsey internet forum superstar Guns On Deck.

Cumulative effects of old age WinStar said. I believe he was 25. It's very very sad. I'm glad I get to own a peace of his legacy by owning a part of one of his fillies. But I'll really miss him. One of my favorite sires and just a solid, consistent stallion

A nice article from Bloodhorse:

There will be a sense of loss worldwide, with MTR having sired champions in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

I was a big fan of More Joyous(NZ).
MTR was a broodmare sire of Cafe Pharoah(USA), too.
May he rest in peace.

Sebring was a really good stallion but he died at age 13. I think he has a couple sons at stud in Australia. IDK if MTR has any other top notch stallions in the SH, they really haven't been breeders favorites in the US.
