OK, here comes a probably dumb question. I don't think I've seen established breeding stallions all decked out for the photographer in full bit and bridle before. Is this a common thing and I just haven't been paying attention? If not, then why are these guys all dressed up? Is it just a control thing?

I don't know that it is common but it is how they exercise the stallions at Juddmonte. I'm guessing the pics was taken during the stallions exercise session. They do so with a bridle, bit, blanket(rug) and not a saddle but a girth(but I'm sure it feels a saddle to the stallion). I guess its just to remind the horse of racing/working and how he is supposed to behave, since they take them all out at the same time.

Many other European studs do confirmation photos in the bridle, too. I think it's more tradition than anything. Stallions at horse shows are shown in-hand in a bridle as well.

About half of these boys are wearing a bridle, for example. https://www.nhstallions.co.uk/search Some of them have an extra leather piece under the chin that I'm not entirely sure the name of but it probably replicates the idea of the ring bit that's used with a halter when leading strong horses.

In the US it's still common with photographs of warmbloods and the few farms that photograph their TB studs like that are sporthorse breeders.

Not a girth, but a surcingle - but yeah basically you can attach side reins to it for lunging or run long reins through it to long line. They seem to use it to hold the quarter sheet in place, they also seem to use them at a lot of the the European horses in training sales. They are always monogrammed with the trainer or stable's name.

Bridles seem to be standard for European/English/Irish stallion operations. Coolmore, Darley, Juddmonte, etc. show and photograph all of their stallions with them. Honestly I think it is a better look than a chain running over or through their mouths.
