Dream of Summer --> Knicks Go

I know KG was a talented racehorse, but I kind of hate seeing a blue-hen-mare like DoS going to a freshman stallion.

I kind of hate to see a 23-year-old mare get bred  She has been SO good to them and I truly hope she produces a nice KG foal next year. But it's not worth the risk.

i'm still really curious as to why Charlatan is getting so many good mares. he only lasted 5 starts, had a positive test in one of his 2 Gr. I wins (of course that has been disputed, but still..) and had a pretty high stud fee. it seems he is getting better mares than KG who was HOTY and EQ who is a dual champion... might be a stretch but this looks like one of the best 1st books since AP and Justify.

in cases like these, she's technically I/F to the 2nd name, right? as in that was her second cover?

I wish I understood it. I don't really get all the love for Yaupon, either. The only explanation for Charlatan is that Hill n Dale is throwing a lot of weight behind him, along with other entities who were part of his racing career.

i feel like he is getting a better book than Authentic did on his first year and i might be mistaken but imo Authentic got way more support from Spendthrift and his other owners/shareholders than what Charlatan is getting from his, given he was HOTY/Champ 3YO and all. it's strange really. i was expecting him to snatch a few good mares, but if by the start of the season you told me all these he got were going to a 1st crop sire, i'd be guessing either EQ or Knicks, maybe even Maxfield. he will have no excuses really when they hit the track.

I usually make my list into a spreadsheet when I'm finished. It's interesting to sort by stallion and compare. I never got around to making a spreadsheet from my 2021 list, but it's not too late. It won't be a complete list for Authentic or Charlatan, mind you. It should be enough to give a inkling of how their first books compare, though.

i don't know if you want to add him as of course his boik isn't nowhere near theirs, but i have Tiz the Law's report of mares bred from Equineline if you're interested.

Not seen a whole lot shared here...

Other than maybe Dream of Summer, which is a big surprise.

It's all about "brilliance". Charlatan had that 'it' factor, where he ran horses off their feet for most of his career, short as it was. It's how Army Mule and similar horses get mares.
Charlatan in a first year sire and Authentic is a 2nd year sire, most stallions have lesser books their 2nd year. I think Charlatan is better looking than Authentic. Charlatan also sold better as a yearling which might attract the commercial breeders. His female side is better, with his dam being a G2W/mG1P (you have to go back to Authentic's 3rd dam to find a stakes winner). Charlatan's stud fee is $20k cheaper. Into Mischief is still going strong and already has more sons at stud than Speightstown and will continue to make more. At 24 years old Speightstown's books may be being reduced in size to help him out, which would funnel more mares to his son.
I'm not necessarily saying that I 'agree' with so many nice mares going to Charlatan.... but I also get it.

As far as Knicks Go goes, he's California Chrome 2.0. Nice racehorse, but the family isn't great and he'll be overseas in a couple years.

I would say that Knicks Go's pedigree is more "fashionable" than Chrome's was, which is in his favor.

Paynter has stood his entire career in Kentucky, was a MGSW, and has sired several other stakes horses. Lucky Pulpit...not so much.

Curiously, they're both o/o mares by Maryland-associated stallions.

you've made some real nice points and i think that helps clear some things up for me at least. just in this part what i meant is that he is getting a better first book than Authentic did last year.
