In Japan, even if there is no strict definition for this terminology, I would say from 1800m (about 9F) to 2200m (about 11F) is ‘middle distance’.

And, by JRA’s definition, a horse who shows his / her best going at around 2000m (about 10F) is considered a ‘middle distance horse’.

California Chrome(USA) yearlings sold quite well, too, led by the third highest-priced colt (hip 39) out of the G3 winner Eterna Minoru(JPN)(Empire Maker). The bay colt was bred and consigned by Fujiwara Farm.

I saw that the JRA purchased a few which I found interesting. What do they do with the ones they purchase?
Awww.. thanks for the question!

JRA regularly purchases yearlings at the open sales.
And all of them will be offered at the JRA breeze-up Sale in the following year as a 2yo.

The link below might be helpful to understand why they do that and the whole system.
Please have a look at it.

I'm guessing that being a full to Mohaymen might be a draw. So...how IS Mohaymen doing as a stud? He has offspring racing by now, doesn't he?
TIA.

In my opinion, not particularly good but he also hasn't been popular with breeders. His first crop is 3yos. He only has 103 foals in his first 2 crops combined. He has 66 starters, 34 winners, 2 SWs, including G2SW Elm Drive(she won the Sorrento(G2) last year and finished 3rd in the Great Lady M(G2) last out). His other SW is Mowins who has won 3 Indiana state-bred stakes.

Bricks and Mortar(USA) colt topped the second day of the HBA Hokkaido Selection Sale (Yearlings) in Japan on July 27th 2022.
Bred and consigned by Fujiwara Farm, the dark bay colt (hip 204) is out of the G1 Oka Sho winner Reine Minoru(JPN)(Daiwa Major).

Shadwell evidently thinks enough of Mohaymen's future that he was the sole stallion they kept on their property.

And after just moving to Old Friends.... we've now lost both Dumanni and Swain
I know they were both old... but you have to wonder how much good that move to OF did them....

They were so old there's no way you could really say what caused them to go down. At that age, they could be doing well - then take a nosedive.

Additionally, I don't think you could really fault OF, as much as people seem to like to in these cases.

If they said, "No, we won't take these elders," Shadwell probably would've found somewhere else to ship them out, since they seem to be shaving down residents at their property (which will probably end up sold in a cuple years, as Northport predicted).

They went to OF because they would get the care they deserved to the very end. Which is what happened. Those boys lived long wonderful lives, I doubt the move had anything to do with them passing. The risk would have been within the first week or so. They were fine, just old fellas.

Also, any photo of Swain at OF, he looked bright, relaxed and happy. Very intelligent too.

Did either Dumaani or Swain have any good sons that are at stud? They were fine racehorses and clearly had good genetics to reach the ages of 30 and 31.

No. All of Dumaani's best sons were geldings and Swain's few sons at stud (Muqbil in Australia, Stanley Park in Trinidad, Musanid in Venezuela) were unsuccessful.

Jack Hobbs (GB) has Swain as his damsire and is fairly popular as a dual-purpose stallion in the UK.

exactly my feelings. i'm annoyed at farms that do this, but i'm glad OF is there to take them in. we may not like the somewhere else in some cases.
edit; also agree that 30 and 31, hard to pin any one reason other than "really dang old" which is honestly very very likely.
