The co-ed Kentucky Juvenile S. at Churchill Downs went to California-bred filly Tom's Regret (by Tom's Tribute).
In second was Washington-bred colt The Big Wam (by The Big Beast).
Much more common to see fillies run against and beat males early in the juvenile season but still cool when it happens - especially when it is a state-bred with a non-Kentucky pedigree.

According to DRF's Entries, The Big Wam is by the Dynaformer stallion, Mr. Big, standing in California, IIRC.

I'm a fan after learning she is by Silvano. What a cool, globe-trotting horse he was.tachyon wrote: ↑Sat Jul 02, 2022 11:06 am Sparkling Water(SAF), 2017F. Silvano(GER) x Epsumanti(GB) by Dansili(GB), won impressively the G1 Durban July 2200m turf at Greyville, South Africa, on July 2nd 2022.

https://www.drf.com/news/free-belmont-o ... ttle-eurosElectric Lettuce on fire
Recommended viewing for those who appreciate pure speed and clever race calls: a replay of race 1 at Golden Gate Fields on June 11, won by blazingly fast 2-year-old filly Electric Lettuce. By speed stallion Straight Fire, she lit up early, won geared down, and faces boys Saturday in the $75,000 Everett Nevin Stakes at Pleasanton.
Electric Lettuce’s slow post-race work, three furlongs in a mellow 40.20 seconds, was due to a loose horse that required her rider take hold. Trainer Blaine Wright said the filly’s subsequent five-furlong drill in 1:01.60 was sharp. The filly, owned and bred by LNJ Foxwoods, could be gone Saturday in the Nevin.
As for the hemp-hint race call of her debut, Golden Gate announcer Matt Dinerman nailed it in deep stretch, saying Electric Lettuce “smoked ’em.”

Great story there, she's bred and owned by Kate and Bernie Dalton, Kate trains, Bernie rides and Bernie drove the truck up from Camden over the weekend! She got taken off lasix 7 starts back and it seems to have turned her career around. Would be a real kick if the Jonathan Sheppard next month becomes a duel between her and The Mean Queen.

How is the Mean Queen? I remember they wanted to take her to Europe but then she got a quarter crack or something.

Yeah I'm not sure if it was a quarter crack or other injury that derailed her spring but apparently she's been training up to the Saratoga meet and the 2 3/8 mile Jonathan Sheppard (nee Turf Writer's Cup) is more of her distance so she's most likely to go there. Hopefully a rematch with Snap Decision who is being pointed there.

Hopefully no injuries, I just had a vague memory of it. Do you have any recommendations for keeping up with NA steeplechase news?
