The modern Thoroughbred breeding stallion doesn’t seem to live much past 23 or 24. Obviously you have your AP Indy’s and Forty Niners, but then you have your Empire Maker, El Prado, Galileo, Mastercraftsman, Kingmambo, Deep Impact, Sunday Silence, Pulpit, etc.

Maybe it’s recency bias, or I am just more personally familiar with ponies and warmbloods. Or young(er) stallions dying get more headlines.

Think the difference between a 21yo stallion and other older stallions is most comparable to a 60yo human dying of natural causes and someone else still being active at the age of 90.

Yes- my father is 95 (WW2 veteran) and lives independently and walks 3-4 miles every day. He is mentally as sharp as ever and reads 1-2 mystery novels a week. I see others in their 50’s and 60’s who look much older and have to use those motorized carts in the grocery store. Some is genetics but lifestyle has a lot to do with it too. I wonder if the overfeeding and lack of exercise of most US stallions has anything to do with it? Or is it just that they are pushed so hard so early they just wear out at 20?

His progeny has been a bit quiet this year but they’re starting to pick up led by Annapolis.

Temple City, The Factor, and Twirling Candy are pretty big turf influences and knock on wood they are young. Huh. All T names.

More Than Ready is also still around but I'm sure he'll be pensioned within the next two years.

Well yes and...no. Arguably, this best sons to go to stud don't have progeny on the track yet.

War Front is still around and he's the current leading turf sire here. I'm hoping that Claiborne has extended his life by limiting his book throughout his career.

3 winners including one stakes winner (Red Run, Texas Turf Mile S.). His sire being Argentinean champion Candy Ride probably plays a bigger role in this though. And Gun Runner's damside is relatively turf-y (damsire Giant's Causeway, dam is a 1/2 to turf G1 winner Funtastic).
