Horrific drowning death being reported on local TV stations. Apparently Alfred Hanover, a 2 yo pacer, was being unhooked from the racing bike after race 2 Monday night at Northfield Park. He spooked, ran into the infield pond and drowned. This is the second time in a year this has happened at Northfield Park, but luckily the other horse was able to be saved. According to an article, this is the 3rd incident like this in 3 years here in Ohio.
Horrible and scary all the way around.

Was he still harnessed to the bike? Horses can normally swim, but being entangled in the harness and the bike shafts could have kept the horse from saving itself.
Horrible.

Not sure- most of what I’ve read or heard has been vague. He was a pacer, so like you mentioned, he probably had hopples and a lot of other gear on him still.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 3:19 pm Was he still harnessed to the bike? per an article on BloodHorse, Firenze Fire's dam, My Every Wish, died "about four weeks ago" from foaling complications.
Yet at the same time there might be tears as Lombardi remembers what will always link both horses. Each was a son of the Langfuhr mare My Every Wish, who passed away about four weeks ago due to complications after delivering a daughter by Honest Mischief named Blakely's Wish.

Seattle Moon (Tormount × Moon Thistle, by Malibu Moon) died July 10 at Sekrekov Stud in Russia due to an apparent heart attack. He was 13.
Seattle Moon was undefeated in four starts and won the First Crown Cup (G2 - RUS). His dam Moon Thistle was bred in the United States but won both the Russian Oaks AND Derby in 2004, and was named a champion. Moon Thistle has produced several stakes-quality horses.
Seattle Moon had a high percentage of stakes horses from runners himself - 80%. His best foal is Solidad - a 3x G1 winning filly.
This is the same stud farm that had Scatter the Gold pass away recently. They have to be devastated.

It's really bad today, with multiplying posts in all our sections. I've Messaged Kurenai again, and I know she will do housekeeping eventually.

It's heartbreaking when a horse acts up and fatally injures itself. It wasn't the fault of the track - it was just a 2yo being a green and fractious 2yo.
If you cocooned them in bubble wrap, they could still find a way to hurt themselves.

The wackos on Reddit are still blaming Baffert. I am most emphatically not a Baffert supporter, but I posted that this kind of accident could have happened to any trainer. Typical response:
“Baffert horses more fragile than most. How many excuses can we make for the guy?”
More worried about blaming Baffert than mourning a 2yo who died much too young.
