A helicopter? Why? Was Epsom using a helicopter to film the race from above? Haven't the British ever heard of drones?
Between that and Epsom's stupendously stupid decision to set off noisy, smoky fireworks just as the horses reached the gate, could someone please go smack some sense into the course's decision makers? I've read that jockeys had their horses react badly at the Epsom gate because of those fireworks. Horrible timing, betraying what to me should be a hard, fast rule: DON'T do ANYTHING to harm the horses and their riders.

I was absolutely shocked and appalled that fireworks went off prior to the
Derby--- what were they thinking--- or not thinking-stupid!!

I have had a number of non-horseracing friends who have wondered and asked why Santa Anita doesn't put on a fireworks show for the 4th of July, with that giant infield and huge grandstand making a perfect venue for such a thing. To the credit of some of them, all it took was a "are you sure you need to ask that question" kind of look and they woke up pretty quick!y.

Others not so much!!🙄

You couldnt make this up.

This Sunday at Gowran Park there are 2 horses entered in the same race.

Sierra Nevada trained by Charles Obrien.

Sierra Nevada trained by Jessica Harrington.

How on earth has that happened.

I've seen that happen before when you have horses named/registered in different countries. The various Jockey Clubs apparently have no rules about not naming a horse when that name has been used in another jurisdiction.
In this case, the #10, Sierra Nevada (GB), a 4yo by Mastercraftsman, is British-bred. The #30, Sierra Nevada (USA), is a USA-bred 3yo by American Pharoah.

Norway had two horses named Smooth Escape, one born in Norway and the other in France. They ran against each other a few times.

That would make Australian officials’ heads explode. Even if your English G1 horse is coming in temporarily they’ll still make you change it’s name if it is the same name as an Australian horse running at a bush track.

Reminds me of these two:
Ertijaal (USA) - 2011 c. Oasis Dream X Shabiba, by Seeking the Gold - Owned by Shadwell, MGSW in Dubai. Died 2018 from colic.
Ertijaal (AUS) - 2011 c. Hard Spun X Alharir, by Jeune - Owned by Shadwell, G1 winner in South Africa, GSW in Dubai. Died 2017 from a fractured sesamoid in the G1 Jebel Hatta.

I don't think they ever ran against each other, but they did race on the same cards at Meydan.

The younger Sierra Nevada should be running as Sierra Nevada II outside of the USA. At least that's how it was done when the opposite (a foreign horse exported to the US with the same name as an earlier American horse) scenario used to occur i.e. Cougar II, Sir Gallahad III, Ambassador IV.

Shadwell has a habit of giving identical names to their horses... they have a 2018 Malathaat (USA) and a 2018 Malathaat (IRE). They did the same thing that year with Mutasaabeq. As if things weren't confusing enough already!

William Buick has picked up a nice spare ride in the Coronation Stakes on Spendarella.

Also Dermot Weld has said Homeless Songs is not a certain runner if the going has any firm in the description.

Going at present Good To Firm, Good In Places, Watering ?

Raclette is back she wins the listed race today at Longchamp.

It was a drop in class but now she has got her head in front she can improve again.

She looks as if she will get further, the form looked solid, ive kept the faith in her,she taken a while to come to hand

Onwards and upwards

Jessica Harrington’s horse won. This Sierra Nevada is beautifully bred: by American Pharoah out of Visions of Clarity, making her a half-sister to Preakness winner War of Will and G1 winner Pathfork.

Does anyone know when Ascot entries close? Also, what are the field limit caps? I've been trying to get a jump start on handicapping and Racing Post has field sizes of 40-88 horses on some days. Are those just probables?

I have to assume those are just probables. While it's true that Royal Ascot has huge fields, especially in some of their handicaps, I think the max field even in those is 32.

Ascot's Tuesday card seems to have finalized. Biggest field is 20 in the Ascot Stakes (Heritage Handicap).
Wednesday must still be 'a work in progress,' as there are 40 horses listed in the Windsor Castle Stakes, and 72 in the Royal Hunt Cup. Presume that has to change.
