Moi, I hope that the only chestnut makes the Satsuki Sho - the Derby double.

Based upon photos: Justin Palace, Be Astonished, Equinox, and Geoglyph look best.

Desierto reminds me of an Akhal Teke!

A little bit too far for Geoglyph maybe?

I knew Do Deuce would be dangerous for the derby, 2400m is perfect for him IMO

For the 3000m Kikuka-sho I think it's gonna a be Equinox's race :P

Great Ride by Yutaka Take came with a wet sail down the middle of the track.

Masaaki Matsushima (Do Deuce's owner):

''I've been a big fan of the jockey Yutaka Take. So happy to win the Japanese Derby with Do Deuce and Yutaka Take today. My dream is not to win the Arc. My true dream is to see Yutaka Take win the Arc.
Yes, we will definitely go the Arc.''

2400 meters in 2:21.9!

Was the turf very firm or did the horses run that fast?

Yeah the turf was fairly firm, but I think that they ran really strong to their bests led by the hot fractions in the early part of the race.
That was a wonderful race and the top two horses were super.
And Yutaka Take became the oldest Tokyo Yushun winning jockey at the age of 53.

Has the course been changed at all over the years? Big time drop late 80’s.

The entries for the Yasuda Kinen are so good. So many horses I like, I don't know who I want to win

Tokyo Racecourse had a major renovation in between 2002 and 2003.
But the course setting for 2400m turf barely changed and they have basically been running the same course until today.
Before the inaugural running of the Japan Cup won by Mairzy Doates(USA) in 1981, Japanese horses were simply slow.
NZ Horlicks' record time winning over Japanese icon Oguri Cap in 1989 was really epic and extraordinary, even if the turf condition could have become firmer in late 80's than before.
Then, it seems that horses with more speed, through improvements of breeds and trainings, have been running at the same course in a shorter time.

I'm interested to see if Cafe Pharoah can make some noise here. He was unplaced in his only turf start, but at 1-1/4 miles that likely was further than he wanted to go.

As the current odds may suggest, this race is very wide-open.
I hope that Elusive Panther, who seems to have found his best going 1600m at Tokyo, will extend his win streak.
