Kapuna comes off a runner-up finish for trainer Bret Calhoun in a first-level allowance optional claiming race at Fair Grounds on the undercard of the Risen Star. He finished three lengths behind Cyberknife , who sits out the Louisiana Derby to await the April 2 Arkansas Derby (G1)....

...Kapuna, a son of Hard Spun , an improving 3-year-old. The colt has a win, two seconds, and a third in four starts with earnings of $97,400. He has not yet competed into a stakes race.

"Well, we don't have the resume some of these horses in here have," he said. "But like I say, I think he's on the improve, and I think he's taking some big steps forward even since that (last) race."

I watched KUPUNA's last race (Feb 19, race#8 at Fairgrounds). No real excuse, except he had to wait behind horses in order to circle outside for running room while traveling pretty wide on the turn, and meanwhile the winner got a big head start on him. He will have to improve off that effort, but at this stage there is plenty room for improvement in most of them.

MY PHILLY TWIRL won the $100k Sanibel Island Stakes for 3yo fillies at Gulfstream today. She won despite a wide gate post position, which is usually hard to win from at Gulfstream. All the others in the superfecta broke from gates 1-4, just to illustrate that track bias regarding starting gate position. They were charging hard at her toward the end, but she dug in and held on for the win. So Hard Spun has another stakes winner. It's been a while! This filly has now won 3 in a row. She is Hard Spun's 90th stakes winner.

Gut-punched this weekend. GREEN LIGHT GO euthanized after a workout. Broken right front leg irreparably damaged according to vet report. Damn! Took me a while to reconcile with that one, though my heart is still broken. Poor baby seemed to be doing so much better back with Jerkens. Made me so sad.
