Its absolutely disgusting.Northport wrote: ↑Sun Mar 27, 2022 11:39 am The Last Lion, winner of the 2016 G1 Middle Park who retired at 3 to stand at Darley, then Hedgeholme Stud, before fertility issues saw him return to training in 2021, has died after fracturing a hind pastern in a 6f Handicap at Kempton.
Probably couldve done better by an 8 year old former G1 winner who was off the track for 5 years

#1 - no horse that has been away from the track for 5 years should even be allowed to race. I would say even 2 years is too long.
#2 - imo, once a horse is used for breeding it shouldn't be allowed to race again. There have been so many incidents of a horse returned to training after being subfertile/infertile or just unpopular and almost all of them end badly for the horse. Everyone needs to do better for them by changing the rules.

I don't know that it's the breeding itself that causes problems; IMHO it's the time off from the rigorous training that keeps the horse's bones/tendons/muscles racing fit. After five years, getting his body back to racing fit/safe may not be possible.
I feel sorry for The Last Lion.

How many times does this need to happen before it stops? Why? He deserved more than this.Flanders wrote: ↑Sun Mar 27, 2022 3:09 pmIts absolutely disgusting.Northport wrote: ↑Sun Mar 27, 2022 11:39 am The Last Lion, winner of the 2016 G1 Middle Park who retired at 3 to stand at Darley, then Hedgeholme Stud, before fertility issues saw him return to training in 2021, has died after fracturing a hind pastern in a 6f Handicap at Kempton.

This is so heartbreaking...poor boy. To many racing people, horses are just commodities with which to try and make money off of. Not nearly the majority, but way, way too many.Izvestia wrote: ↑Sun Mar 27, 2022 4:30 pmHow many times does this need to happen before it stops? Why? Every time I cringe at the US breeding industry I remember that horses retiring to stud who only really ran at 2 is far more commonplace down under.

I like how they specify that his injury was sustained from a walker accident, rather than a conformation flaw. It'll be interesting to see how well supported he is, because you know Coolmore won't be sending any of their own mares to him.Mylute wrote: ↑Tue Mar 29, 2022 4:11 pm Every time I cringe at the US breeding industry I remember that horses retiring to stud who only really ran at 2 is far more commonplace down under.

Australian racing does a lot of things right, but they definitely are lightning fast on retiring their 2 and 3 year old colts once they get a couple group wins or a single G1 win... or in the case of Acrobat, a single win that happened to be very fast.
While the prizemoney down there is excellent, they have far too many group races in my opinion. It's fun in the Spring and Autumn Carnivals to see top horses (usually the mares and geldings) racing in two or three G1s over the course of four or five weeks, but when there are sooo many group races, you get a decent colt having a really good day to win his G1, then poof he's off to the breeding shed.

Stallions who retire after one start should automatically be gelded theyre not needed or wanted in the shedNorthport wrote: ↑Tue Mar 29, 2022 5:36 pmI like how they specify that his injury was sustained from a walker accident, rather than a conformation flaw. my biggest issue with them is how overbred their studs are. and it's obvious they don't have all that 'drive' naturally. breeding + medications must do wonders to their heartsSukiSatsuki wrote: ↑Sat Apr 02, 2022 11:24 pmits spendthrist theyre a terrible farmPalace Malice wrote: ↑Sat Apr 02, 2022 11:12 pm Race Day has two good contenders for the derby. And they will cover absolutely anything for the stud fee.brunanas wrote: ↑Sun Apr 03, 2022 3:48 ammy biggest issue with them is how overbred their studs are. and it's obvious they don't have all that 'drive' naturally. breeding + medications must do wonders to their heartsSukiSatsuki wrote: ↑Sat Apr 02, 2022 11:24 pmits spendthrist theyre a terrible farmPalace Malice wrote: ↑Sat Apr 02, 2022 11:12 pm Race Day has two good contenders for the derby. Saw a post last week with a breeder with a coloured TB mare who was booked into Goldencents. She was unraced, from a whole family of unraced and/or raced but non winners or single race maiden winners. Zero pedigree basically. And he's not even on the bottom ladder of their cheapest sires. Imagine what they'd breed to them

and they'd probably breed a mule to their stallions if you paid enough

I’m sure there are talks for bringing back Race Day. Did that for Take Charge Indy but his subsequent runners afterwards hasn’t been so successful thus far.Palace Malice wrote: ↑Sat Apr 02, 2022 11:12 pm Race Day has two good contenders for the derby. Another stallion sold too soon to Korea...

No, the post seems to be gone now. They were looking for boarding recommendations while the mare was in KY. I believe she purchased her from an online auction last yearbrunanas wrote: ↑Sun Apr 03, 2022 1:11 pmdo you remember who the breeder was?Retrospectiv wrote: ↑Sun Apr 03, 2022 10:55 amAnd they will cover absolutely anything for the stud fee.

They wouldn't live cover but they already sell collected semen to other breeds. I saw a pic of a foal by Into Mischief out of a QH Mare earlier this year.brunanas wrote: ↑Sun Apr 03, 2022 1:11 pmdo you remember who the breeder was?Retrospectiv wrote: ↑Sun Apr 03, 2022 10:55 amAnd they will cover absolutely anything for the stud fee.

That isn't something new. IIRC, there were a few Storm Cat QH offspring.
