I just checked in on her (it's just after Midnight on the east coast); and I just thought "Man, she's prob gonna foal tonight after my nyquil sets in" I always miss the actual foaling.

I've been watching and she raised her tail a couple of times, then went back to nibbling. i've got to go to bed soon and I'm afraid I'll miss it!

There certainly isn't a luxurious amount of bedding in her stall--although she may have eaten it bare! Still nibbling tonight.

I wonder if they’re going to do what the people at Gainesway did. They cleaned the stall after the foaling and added plenty of bedding afterwards. Easier to clean a stall with less straw than one with a lot lol

It’s less dusty although it’s not very absorbant like shavings is. When I was in college we would foal the mares on straw with shavings underneath the straw.

Yeah my understanding is it has more cushion but also won’t stick to the newborn foal the way shavings would. It’s also easier on the environment if farms run their own compost.

I have what might be a kind of ignorant question, but folks around here should be used to that by now, so here goes.

Elate's stall looks awfully small to me. Is that just the camera angle maybe, or optical illusion, or are foaling stalls really that lacking in roominess?

Honestly, I've never been within 10 miles of a foaling barn, so I really don't know. I appreciate the help I know is coming! TIA!!

It’s definitely the angle. Here’s a photo of what our stalls look like from the camera’s point of view. Our stalls seem to be a little bigger than Claiborne’s, but our stalls are huge

SB, IMHO your combo of straw on top of shavings makes sense. You get the not-so-dusty cushion of straw, while the shavings underneath would provide a firmer, less-slippery footing for a new foal as it struggles to stand the first time.

Thanks Summer Bird! I can see from your post that it's just how the camera is positioned. So Elate does have more room to have that foal than what it looks like!

Yes I loved when I did that in school. It was more time consuming to clean unfortunately. I know we won’t mix straw and shavings at the farm though because we send our dirty straw to a cattle farm for the cattle to eat
