BOLD JOURNEY did not run well in the Gotham. Seemed to me he was being choked back in the early going. Don't fight with the horse. He didn't run a step after that.

Terrible ride. This horse likes to run toward the front. The jockey kept jerking the horse's head back to ensure the horse ran at the back of the pack. At least 3 diff times the jockey put on the brakes and not very softly. Yes, the horse broke slow. But the horse was wanting to pick up speed and had good running room and seemed to be starting a nice smooth pace . Nope. Jockey fought the horse the first half of the race to slow the horse down. Awful.

I hope they learned their lesson with that fiasco. He made a strong middle move last race and I read commentary that that cost him that race and there were theories that they would try to get him to relax early and save some run for the end in this race. But what they did was far worse than that. They didn't let him run at all. So, he gave up. Damn.

I just read Classic Causeway is heading for that race, too, so that will be a real class test for BELGRADE. In his last race he went to his knees at the start and his jockey gave him a go-stop-go-stop-go kind of ride and he won't be able to get away with that kind of start and riding against stakes winners going forward. Hoping they don't have those kind of mishaps again.

A THREAD OF BLUE is entered in a claiming race on Sunday. Breaks my heart. This horse has won over $1million for his connections. You would think they would have found a second career for him if he's no longer competitive rather than discarding him into claiming races.

Well, BELGRADE didn't do so well in the Tampa Bay Derby. He had a wide trip, but he may be better sticking with sprints.

But ESCAPE ROUTE had a nice win in the 4th race at Santa Anita.

CADDO RIVER won by 5 3/4 lengths. 2nd highest lifetime speed figure.

Wonder if they will point him toward the G2 Oaklawn Handicap on Apr 23rd. My guess is this allowance race was timed just for that reason.

KAPUNA is mentioned in Bloodhorse article about Louisiana Derby...snippets about KAPUNA as follows:

https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing ... iana-derby

Kapuna comes off a runner-up finish for trainer Bret Calhoun in a first-level allowance optional claiming race at Fair Grounds on the undercard of the Risen Star. He finished three lengths behind Cyberknife , who sits out the Louisiana Derby to await the April 2 Arkansas Derby (G1)....

...Kapuna, a son of Hard Spun , an improving 3-year-old. The colt has a win, two seconds, and a third in four starts with earnings of $97,400. He has not yet competed into a stakes race.

"Well, we don't have the resume some of these horses in here have," he said. "But like I say, I think he's on the improve, and I think he's taking some big steps forward even since that (last) race."
