I rather like a small refined head; not a fan of jugheads like Arrogate. A fine racehorse, but not exactly pretty.

I can't find fault with his head, either. It's small but that's not bad in my book. Other than his short neck (which would probably look better with some dressage-like exercises), I think he's actually rather nice.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 2:20 pm I rather like a small refined head; not a fan of jugheads like Arrogate. Nyquist is doing well at stud, so this colt's connections must be hoping his genetics will be better than his race record...or his unimpressive looks.

It makes sense that he looks a little out of proportional. That picture is from probably summer of his 2yo year. He is going to stud as a 3yo. The photo is also at Coolmore, they are who sold him last fall.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 02, 2022 3:49 pm Nyquist is doing well at stud, so this colt's connections must be hoping his genetics will be better than his race record...or his unimpressive looks.

Y'all might hate me for this but when I was scrolling through the BH register my immediate thought was, "Why did they upload a picture of a picture of Pharoah?"

Moquest looks pretty much exactly how Nyquist looked when he first retired to Darley, except he actually has more weight on him. Nyquist looks a picture now, so I like Moquest's chances to wind up a handsome stallion in 2-3 years.
People can also be quick to assume that a horse who was retired due to injury must be inherently unsound. When, in fact, probably no one on this forum is privy to the nature of the injury. It could have been a training injury, but maybe he fell in his stall or kicked a wall.
Full and half brothers to good stallions have some track record of success, even when one of the brothers was significantly less accomplished on the track. Giant's Causeway and Freud, Storm Cat and Pioneering, Invincible Spirit and Kodiac and Sadler's Wells and Fairy King all come to mind. Galileo and Sea the Stars, Devil's Bag and Saint Ballado and Congrats and Flatter are less significant examples, since each one in those pairs of brothers showed comparable racing ability, but still worth a mention.

Go back further and you've got Viceregal (Canadian HOTY and Champion 2 yr old) and his less accomplished full brother Vice Regent.mariasmon wrote: ↑Wed Feb 02, 2022 4:39 pm Moquest looks pretty much exactly how Nyquist looked when he first retired to Darley, except he actually has more weight on him. Vice Regent went on to be 13 time champion sire in Canada.
Viceregal was sold to Japan when he was 12 and never accomplished much.

I guess I tend to agree with Maria's Mon on this subject. Stallions retiring to stud from injuries is a really complex subject.
On one hand you have a horse like Smart Strike who *I think* broke his leg and I don't think he's particularly known for producing fragile progeny. I believe Kitten's Joy also retired due to injury.
Then you have horses like Unbridled's Song, who, well...y'all know.
Moquest will probably do far less damage to the overall gene pool than stallions who did their best running at 2 or ran only like 5 or 6 times breeding 200 mares a year before getting sold overseas.

He's extremely handsome. What a nice-looking horse.Mylute wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 2:18 pm Twice winner Almighwar (Dubawi x Taghrooda, by Sea the Stars) at Garryrichard Stud for 2022. Very handsome! Dam is MG1W.

Kitten's Joy had soft tissue damage in his knee. I think they elected to go ahead and retire him because it was late in his four-year-old year. The problem might have have caused discomfort when running, which could have led to subpar performances.Mylute wrote: ↑Wed Feb 02, 2022 9:21 pm I guess I tend to agree with Maria's Mon on this subject. I found an article about Moquest from last year, when his current owner purchased him for stud from the Keeneland November Sale. It was mentioned that he had a tendon injury. I'm not sure that would dissuade me from breeding to him, if I found everything else about him suitable.

He just seems to have a shortish neck (and so does Alm something, can't check as I'm posting ) But I know that there's criticism of successful runners, so you figure the physicals were'nt so bad after all, but when it's a horse with a minimal record--just hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. Maybe breeders to race might take a shot if the price is right, but even then I'd rather go to a boring proven uncommercial stallion.
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

so far i've seen you hate more stallions than you like, and you don't exactly explain your reasoning outside of "he was retired unsound" and "he was mean" (that last one, the context was incredibly important and was disregarded for some reason, cheers to the posters that had links). as already stated, a lot of important stallions were retired injured, but didn't have a rep for throwing fragile horses.Danniwolfe wrote: ↑Wed Feb 02, 2022 1:37 pmJust looked him up,unraced due to injury.
