Is Mexico considered northern hemisphere? You never hear anything out of their racing/breeding industry. I'm wondering because Math Wizard is retiring to there.

I sure hope it's "considered" Northern Hemisphere! It isn't uncommon to see a Mexican-bred on the West Coast although rarely at higher levels--but the Mexican-bred Kukulkan (sp?) had some success.
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

Hong Kong (American Pharoah half to Caravaggio) having a good time last February at Al Bakhtawar Stud in Pakistan. They also now stand Paradiso, a full to Churchill and Clemmie.

I hope I didn't stray too far off while trying to explain why there is never anything about racing/breeding in Mexico.

The reason you never hear about racing/breeding in Mexico is because the IFHA classifies each country into Part I, Part II, or Part III for cataloging purposes. They are trying to promote better racing in each country. But the races hold no significance to US or other Part I countries, so they have no need to cover it.

For example, the US is in Part I, while Turkey who has been investing a lot of money into their breeding industry in Part II, while Mexico is Part III, which is the lowest rank for flat racing.

Looking at the list of countries its rare to hear anything out of Part II without going looking. Unless the country is trying to move up, like South Korea, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar. Saudi Arabia and Bahrain are both Part III racing countries and they are trying to move up into a higher Part by promoting International racing in their countries by having the Saudi Cup festival and the Bahrain international races. Countries in lower Parts can get races that are considered blacktype for cataloging purposes, they are listed under the next highest Part and Other Races. So technically right now according to the 2021 standards winning the Saudi Cup is not considered a stakes race and it wont be considered a stakes for Part I catalogs unless Saudi Arabia moves up to Part II and the races are put under Other Races.

I'm wondering if they are usually Rancho San Jorge bred horses because that is St. George Stables Mexican farm. They are actively trying to promote Thoroughbred racing in Mexico and bring their best back to the US. Such as Letruska(who is a US homebred for them but started her racing career in Mexico), they also owned Kukulkan and Jala Jala(who finished 2nd in the G3 Royal Delta at Gulfstream a few years ago) but was a top notch runner in Mexico.

Don't believe there was cause he was in Mexico at the time of his passing. There was a post on Hipódromo De Las Americas' twitter, I'll link the US translation someone posted to the original.

I just read on twitter that Tapit does not cover first-time mares. I've never heard this before; is it true?

In today's cringe news:

BG Thoroughbreds in California will be standing unraced Mo the Beholder (Uncle Mo o/o a Leslie's Lady daughter).

What's worse: QB One or Mo the Beholder?

I've never heard that either. I'm sure there's others, but I remember Dynaformer was never allowed to cover first-timers because of well-known aggression issues. Does Tapit have the same thing going on? If so, it's news to me.

Its not unless its a more recent thing cause I know that he was the first stallion for Havre de Grace and Groupie Doll.

Edit to add: Its not a recent thing either, this is a 2021 breeding.

A bit of searching and it seems to be the reason someone came up with on the Zenyatta forum of why Songbird went to Arrogate instead of Tapit her first year.

i read on this site actually that they have to use a padded bumper stick thing between him and the mare, because he gets aggressive. hadn't heard the no first timers but flanders cleared that up.

I had heard a few years back, and I think it is because Tapit is apparently well a bit of a d*(&* when breeding so they don't want wigged out maidens causing an injury I would guess.

This would have to be a relatively recent development because that would have significantly damaged the pool of GSWs fillies for Tapit.

Its not true at all though. I just looked at the Keeneland September catalog, he had 6 yearlings out of first time mares and another mare that had a Tapit in the sale, her first foal was a Tapit. That is 10 examples from barely looking between the years 2013 to 2021 breeding seasons.

If it is true, which it sounds like it isn't... I would only guess maybe they don't want him covering mares without knowing their record of fertility? Sean Tugel of Gainesway was interviewed on the Nick Luck Daily Podcast yesterday said they are limiting Tapit's book to around 90 mares this year, trying to keep it to no more than two covers a day... no mention of restricting maiden mares, but with wear and tear and perhaps fear of declining fertility, they don't want mares that are unknown quantities? Just an absolute guess, most likely a wrong one.

Re: the use of the bumper... I think I heard about that a couple years ago, he is known for his... intensity
