For a horse with only two wins, 101 mares is not a poor number.

Armor is only a G3SW and finished 3rd in a G1 stakes. If 101 were willing to go to Arizona who was more accomplished at 2 and only isn't a G1SW because of Pinatubo, wouldn't less go to Armor?

They might be. It's amazing how readily commercial breeders flock to the newest, shiniest thing despite other proven stallions being out there.

If Armor does attract less than 100 mares, I would say it is because he is standing at Al Shaqab in France. They saw how well Tally Ho Stud did in Ireland with Mehmas, and they are not willing to miss the boat this time around.

While there are lots of good stallions in France, the book sizes just aren’t as big usually. Armor will be an interesting test case to see if french breeders will support a local newly retired speedy three year old… and will any English and Irish breeders ship mares across the channel to get to him.

After Windfields closed he was moved to Ashford where he stood for a couple years before he was sold on to France. He stood in France for a few years before ending up in Sicily where he died at age 16 in 1995. He ended up with 9% SWs from foals (35 out of 392). He got at least 7 G1SWs and sired them on the dirt, turf, and over jumps. He got some nice horses but nothing I would call a superstar which maybe what led to him being moved around so much. I say this cause I only recognized one of his G1SWs names and it was because of a naming controversy in the 2000s, which actually led to the Jockey Club to changing its one naming rule. Willa On The Move (1985 out of Willamae) won the G1 Ashland and was placed in many other G1s that year including the Kentucky Oaks and Alabama. She was retired at the end of her 3yo year and was sold to Japan in 1990. I remember in 2002 people lost their minds when another Willa On The Move (1999 out of Willa Joe) showed up, while the filly didn't win a G1 stakes herself, she was a G3SW and finished 2nd in the G1 Acorn. She was out of a half sister to the original Willa On The Move. This led the Jockey Club to making the rule that the names of G1 winners can not be reused for 25 years.

The six figure stud fees… in 1984 dollars… in Maryland…. Mind boggling. Don’t know if we’ll see a roster like that any time soon. Closest I could think would be AP Indy and Kingmambo at Lane’s End, Montjeu and Galileo at Coolmore… and those are just good stallion duos, forget about 4, 5, 6 breed shaping stallions at one farm at once.
