I remember him! He was a pretty fast little horse. He beat Squirtle Squirt in the GII Laz Barrera (setting a new stakes record), and finished 2nd in the GI DeFrancis Memorial Dash, beating Xtra Heat in the process. (I did look it up. My memory isn't THAT good!)

Put it Back was truly a great stallion, three-time champion sire in Brazil.
I remember him racing in New York.

I also thought 75k for essential quality and 40k for Maxfield was expensive

I would have anticipated $50,000 for EQ and $15,000 For Maxfield. After looking at the Keenland sales results so far I can see why the farms feel empowered.

Third graded stakes winning juvenile that they’ve retired sound in the last couple years. It didnt work great with Gutaifan but it’s paid off in spades for Mehmas, so woohoo.

As a racing fan, it was just plain sad to hear Armor’s trainer Richard Hannon say in a post race interview this summer that the horse is strictly a two year old and while he thinks he could be a nice three year old, it probably wouldn’t happen.

I imagine that they want to appeal to the breeders who can't afford No Nay Never.

Are they there? G2SW Arizona who has a similar record stood for 7k and only got 101 mares his first year, 2022 will be his 2nd year and they lowered his fee to 6k.

Mehmas has covered enormous books every year he's been at stud, it's mind boggling. Everyone wants cheap speed that can turn a profit in summer/autumn of it's two year old year. England, and to a lesser extent Ireland (and I guess everywhere except Japan) are in a crisis of no commercial breeders wanting to breed horses for distance anymore. Most seem to want early looking types that can be pinhooked as yearlings and sold at the breeze up sales.

Tbh I think this problem/trend started with Dark Angel, who has become a fantastic sire and was retired after his two year old season.

Fragile juveniles retiring to stud at rapid pace is also a problem in Australia I've noticed.

I wonder if this is similar to English Channel in that they stand him at Lane's End so they can establish him and then move to Calumet later(I know he stood at Hurricane Hall his first year)? Or if Calumet is going to get out of the standing stallions at the farm business. They haven't had much success and their best stallion died.
