Mendy doesn't just have Scat Daddy's genetics; his dam, Leslie's Lady, has done pretty well as a broodmare. Superb dam side on Mendy, and IMHO better than Justify's.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Mendelssohn and hope he does well. I guess I’m just jaded-I couldn’t believe they sold Declaration of War. And Japan seems to be pretty aggressive lately getting well-bred stallions right before their get start to run.

Japanese breeders have made some savvy buys over the years, and I wish American breeders would learn from them. The Japanese have had success with so many stallions and mares they have purchased from us. Siphoning off high-class breeding stock from American sellers has strengthened their racing stock.
Now powerhouses like Coolmore covet Japanese bloodlines enough to send prized mares to stallions in Japan. Will the US have to do the same? Send mares to stallions in Japan that we foolishly sold off?

Of course they are going to have success but they have also had their share of failures. Just like when Coolmore or Godolphin or whoever buys expensive stallions/mares, they are only going to succeed a part of the time. That's the way the thoroughbred breed has evolved. One place buys horses from other places, some succeed, some don't.

I like to think that things happen for a reason. Like Halo's sale to France got voided and so he got to sire Sunday Silence and all the other horses that have contributed to the breed. I think Sunday Silence needed the mare lines he got in Japan to succeed. Because he wouldn't have been given the opportunity he got in Japan if he had been in the US because he was a turf sire. Even now when I don't think turf stallions are as shunned in the US as they used to be, a lot don't get the respect they should, like Kitten's Joy. Or that maybe the mares that they were successful in Japan at producing top runners, if they hadn't of been sold, they would have went to dirt sires and maybe they needed to go to a specific turf stallion to shine.
Coolmore will send mares where ever to have them bred to superior stallions, as I wrote somewhere on here, the example of Peeping Fawn who has traveled the global in her broodmare career, many times. They would have only used Deep Impact but when he got injured, pulled from service and eventually euthanized in 2019, they already had mares in Japan to be bred to him, so they chose another stallion so the mares got covered. I don't know if they will send mares back there until the next top stallion emerges.

I agree with you.

Those points are debatable.
Sunday Silence could have also been very successful in the US on the dirt if he had been given good dirt mares in the US.
He never raced on the turf, but he came to Japan where the turf racing was their main focus, then he was labelled as a turf sire.
It was a real shame that very few Sunday Silence babies were tested on the conventional dirt to tell us the truth.

I'm sure that the Japanese will want Mendelssohn if Coolmore sells him.
Speed, precociousness, versatility and pedigree are the keywords.

Noble Mission is another stallion I wish had stayed stateside. I mean, I kinda get it-Turf runners aren't exactly popular stateside (Re: Kitten's Joy) so while I wish breeders would have given him more support it doesn't sting as much to me as Declaration of War.

lol

Remember that the breeding sphere in Japan is quite different than in the US. It's difficult for non-Shadai stallions to have a shot.

I'm completely fascinated that American Patriot got significantly more mares than the proven commodity Declaration of War. So strange.

Could be a stud fee issue. Also if Darley is supporting American Patriot strongly, that could explain things.

I was a bit surprised by DOW's number, too.
I was expecting 150+ for him, as I knew he had 152 pre-bookings in last December prior to the 2021 breeding season.
I now suspect that some breeders, who are loyal to JBBA, changed their minds at the last minute and went to either Makfi (whose babies were doing very well lately in Japan) or Noble Mission (new recruit).
But DOW's 128 was still good number for a stallion standing at JBBA.
I've just looked back into mares bred reports at JBBA over the past five years and saw there was only one stallion who covered more than 150 mares ----- that was DOW who covered 152 mares in 2019 in his debut year at JBBA.
Owned partly by the government, JBBA is an institution that does not push too much for their stallions.
AP stood at Darley and Darley is Darley. They must have pushed AP strongly on commercial basis this year.
I'm not unhappy with DOW's 128 after all.

Two-time Tenno Sho Spring winner Fenomeno has been retired from stud duty this year.

On the other hand, dirt champions have no problem finding the market.
Gold Allure son Gold Dream covered the most mares in his debut year at Lex Stud in 2021.

Is Fenomeno permanently pensioned? He's only 12, so that is disappointing. :(

Even though he only covered 18 mares, that’s kind of a decent amount for a non Shadai stallion that already has a couple of crops on the track. Too bad.

Yes, that's disappointing,
Fenomeno strated his stud career at Shadai Stallion Station in 2016.
But his babies didn’t live up to the expectations unfortunately....

https://www.jbis.jp/horse/0001110458/sire/generation/

Fenomeno will be pensioned at Haruya Yoshida's Oiwake Farm.
There may remain a very slim chance that he will be called back to stud if his remaining offspring reverse the trend suddenly from here, but..
