Superstar three-year-old St Mark's Basilica, who beat Arc favourite Tarnawa in the Irish Champion Stakes this month, has been retired to stud with Aidan O'Brien describing him as possibly the best horse he's ever had at Ballydoyle and Coolmore's most important stallion prospect since Galileo.
St Mark's Basilica will end his racing career as the joint top-rated horse in training and unbeaten at three following a flawless Classic campaign that saw him win the French 2,000 Guineas and French Derby, Coral-Eclipse and Irish Champion Stakes.

You don't delay getting the "most important stallion prospect since Galileo" into the breeding shed for a minute. Winning this year's BC Turf or next year's Arc won't increase his value one bit, and only exposes him to the risks of racing and training with which we're all too familiar.

Now that Galileo has passed, I wonder if Coolmore will actually support St Mark’s Basilica with their best mares… most of which are by Galileo, who is SMB’s damsire.

Idk… the only young stallions they have thrown massive support behind are American Pharoah and (even moreso) Justify. They just never really throw their young guys in Ireland a chance until they are actually proven, and even then they don’t really send them many of their own mares. See: No Nay Never and Camelot.

The whole best horse in Ballydoyle and most important new stallion since Galileo is purely a sales pitch to me. If Galileo was still alive I don’t think we’d hear any of that.

I know a lot of this is captain obvious stuff. But the whole playing up the speculation with the injury before the Juddmonte, then the drifting during the Irish Champion Stakes, then the soreness afterwards…. Just say you need him in the shed in 2022 and call it a day.

They won't send Galileo mares to him. Also I don't think they need to lie about the horse having an issue. He was going to retire at the end of the year regardless. They don't keep horses like him in training at 4.

Having just lost Santa Barbara and Innisfree, Coolmore may be even more reluctant than usual to take any chances with such a valuable stallion prospect.

Trueshan wins the Prix Du Cadran with Stradivarius a few lengths back in second, who may or may not be retired after this.

The German horse named for an Italian poet wins the big race in France.

Hard to pick him but congrats to the connections.

And this scene was soooooooooo graceful!
I love It!!!
Arc winning jockey René Piechulek paid respect to his friend Filip Minarik who had to end his jockey career following an accident.

Lot of salt on Instagram right now calling flat racing shit because longshots can win.

Today I learned longhsots never win over jumps.

You really can't ever underestimate a stout German pedigree over bottomless ground.

Not the result I expected, but it looks like everyone ran their race, even if most hated the ground. Seeing a longshot win is fun, but I really wish we could get a good/firm Arc and see how 80% of the field would do on their ideal ground. But Paris in October doesn't really allow for that ;)

When even the French commentators call the ground "mud," I have to look at this race as a curiosity. Doesn't really say much about the winner, except that he was a lightweight (as in having a lighter body) mud-lover with decent stamina.
Looking forward to seeing most of the runners come back on a racecourse that doesn't remind me of the swim from Assateague to Chincoteague.

I think it would be neat if TT came over for the BC. We haven't had very many German bred or based horses run IIRC.

Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp winner A Case of You (Hot Streak) is interested in coming.

I haven't seen them mention the BC as a goal for him, though that could change, they did say Japan, so assuming Japan Cup.

The article said, plans were for Tarnawa to try to defend her title in the Turf.

I saw somewhere that said TT will look at the Breeders Cup, but I also think they'll be looking everywhere so that doesn't mean anything.
