Certain Arabian and Quarter Horse breeders have come dangerously close though.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 28, 2021 4:03 pm Retrospectiv: No one bred appaloosas to have skimpy tails. It's purely part of the gene that causes 'appaloosa' characteristics (LP, leopard complex).
Thanks for that information. It's good to know that humans haven't genetically abused a horse breed the way some dog and cat breeders have.

You mean like halter QHs that are SO heavily-muscled that they can hardly move?
Or Arabians whose faces are so dished that their brain pan is severely compromised?
Yeah...but still not as bad as the brachycephalic dogs and cats who can't breathe, IMHO. Or toy breeds who can't give birth naturally.

The English bulldog and Pekingese come to mind as particularly egregious examples of maladaptive dog breeding practices.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 07, 2021 3:26 pm You mean like halter QHs that are SO heavily-muscled that they can hardly move?

All the bulldogs have been bred far, FAR from their original build. I'll add King Charles Spaniels (I think that's the spaniel breed) that have skulls that stop growing...before the brain does. Imagine deliberately breeding a dog that could end up with its own brain being slowly crushed as it grows.

don't forget either that people started purposefully breeding munchkin cats. there has to be issues associated with that or there will be in the future.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 07, 2021 9:43 pm All the bulldogs have been bred far, FAR from their original build. Ohhhh no. I did not want to think about those poor cats. How could you want to take away the very grace that makes a cat a CAT. I just........

When a grey has so much red in its coat, does that have anything to do with chestnuts in its genetics? Is there a reason some greys are rose grey, and others are silver/steel-toned?

At least with the King Charles spaniels, breeders early in the 20th century apparently began breeding back to the 17th century type, which meant lengthening the muzzles--hence the more normal Cavalier King Charles separate breed. Unfortunately (I've heard) after WWII there were only a half dozen surviving, and they all carried a genetic mitral heart valve defect.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 07, 2021 9:43 pm All the bulldogs have been bred far, FAR from their original build. I loved Arabians in the 1960's and early 1970's before they turned into caricatures.
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

There is, I think. It has to do with the base coat.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 08, 2021 7:56 pm When a grey has so much red in its coat, does that have anything to do with chestnuts in its genetics? Is there a reason some greys are rose grey, and others are silver/steel-toned?
Hip 225, c. Munnings x View, is a splashy chestnut. In the video, you can see a white spot on his belly. https://catalog.keeneland.com/catalog/hip/0225
Hip 266 - c. More Than Ready x Autumnal, also a splashy chestnut. https://catalog.keeneland.com/catalog/hip/0266
Hip 312 - c. American Pharoah x Chocolate Pop, another one of those reddish greys - barely greyed out, so looks almost roan. https://catalog.keeneland.com/catalog/hip/0312

It has some bearing, but most of these photos we see are so far into the greying process that determining base coat is not possible.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 08, 2021 7:56 pm When a grey has so much red in its coat, does that have anything to do with chestnuts in its genetics? The hyperpigmentation that grey causes can skew the look of that base colour as the horse goes through the greying process. I've seen palominos be very steel grey.

Cloud Computing has a son named Attila the Dun who is registered dkbr. I wonder if this is just a horse pun or if he actually looks dunish.
